Position Summary:
Under the supervision of Motor Pool Director, perform automotive repair and computer diagnostics at the journeyman level for the Tribe`s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance and repair on all types of vehicles, cars, trucks, lawn equipment, loaders and dump trucks; perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and diagnostics.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair all vehicle makes and models, foreign and domestic, including gas and diesel engines on all tribal vehicles.
- Perform computer testing on all internal and external electronic systems using latest equipment.
- Perform, diagnose and repair all drive train issues involving tribal vehicles and equipment.
- Provide routine maintenance to tribal vehicles on a reoccurring basis such as: oil changes, tire rotations, checking and maintaining fluid levels, seasonal maintenance, cleaning of vehicles as required, and overall general maintenance.
- Drain, remove, and replace transmission filters.
- Conduct maintenance and repair of wheel and axle assemblies including repacking bearings and replacement of seals.
- Complete brake inspections and repairs, including checking cylinders, surfacing drums and rotors, replacing shoes and pads, removing, assembling, and cleaning all components.
- Inspect and repair front and rear suspension.
- Perform engine tune-ups; remove and install engines as needed.
- Remove and install mufflers; remove and replace mechanical and electrical parts including starters, batteries, fuel pumps, alternators, relays, switches, lights and wires.
- Inspect and repair emissions and exhaust systems.
- Conduct vehicle safety inspection and maintain appropriate records of inspections.
- Document all inspections and repairs in database.
- Track parts inventories and order parts; track work orders and job estimates.
- Fabricate and weld parts when needed.
- Make road calls and tow vehicles back to the Motor Pool.
- Clean, wash and vacuum vehicles as required.
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Four years` computer diagnostic, automotive shop, and diagnostic and repair maintenance experience.
- Must be eligible for state certification in all major fields of automotive repair and inspection.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in heavy equipment, repairs of hydraulics, air brakes, drive trains, transmissions, diesel engines and gas engines.
- Experience with maintenance and repairs of small engines and equipment.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- State Certification in automotive repair and inspection.
- Must have a valid State of Michigan Driver`s License with the proper designation required for the vehicle utilized to perform the job duties; must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver`s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of materials, tools and techniques of the automotive, diesel, heavy duty and/or hydraulic maintenance trade.
- Knowledge of work hazards and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of vehicle insurance, driver safety and vehicle policies.
- Knowledge of automotive inspection practices and procedures.
- Skill in the safe operation of all types of garage equipment including tire machines, lathes, presses, alignment units, hoists, jacks, scopes, analyzers and power tools
- Skill in coordinating, prioritizing and handling multiple tasks.
- Skill in maintaining accurate records, reports, and documents.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

- Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment and automotive repair.
- Required to stand for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally walk, bend, stoop, stretch, and reach.
- Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more.
Work Environment:
- Normal garage environment.
- Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials.
- Work involves moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions.
- Exposure to gas, oil, diesel fuel, lubricants, chemicals and solvents.
- Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
- Travel may be required.
