Overview:
Great Lakes Environmental Center, Inc. (GLEC) is anticipating an expansion of our staff and is looking for a qualified candidate to join our field teams in conducting a Marine Debris Assessment Program (MDAP). The MDAP is a probabilistic survey of the nation’s coastal waters. GLEC anticipates hiring one seasonal Field Research Technician positions for 2025.
Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities include working from a boat daily at coastal sites around the Great Lakes to collect data and samples related to marine debris. Candidates must have a strong teamwork ethic, a flexible schedule, and a willingness to work with extended travel in wilderness areas. Field crews will travel for several days at a time while conducting daily site visits throughout the assigned sampling region. All approved travel, including hotel and meal per diem and other incidental travel expenses, are paid or reimbursed by GLEC.
Qualifications:
Physical Skill and Effort/Working Conditions: Ability to lift 50+ pounds, ability to work in wilderness areas, and must have a valid state driver’s license. Experience working on and operating motorized boats, as well as boat trailering experience is preferred. This Field Technician work often requires long field days (> 10 hours) in small teams for several days at a time (overnight stays in wilderness areas), working offshore from boats daily in potentially harsh weather conditions, and traveling away from home for extended durations. Successful candidates will exhibit a willingness to learn and attention to detail.
Compensation:
This seasonal Field Research Technician position is a non-exempt position, and the hourly pay rate is $20. Approved overtime over 40 hours per week is paid at time and half. This is an unbenefited position.
