Under the supervision of a Program or Clinic Coordinator/Supervisor, conducts nutrition assessments, provides nutrition counseling to eligible community residents, prepares nutrition care plans, and serves as a nutrition resource person for staff. Teaches group education sessions related to nutrition and makes nutrition related presentations to interested groups in Ingham County.

Essential Functions

1. Conducts nutritional assessments and provides nutritional education services to participants of WIC, Ingham Community Health Centers, Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP), and other public health programs.
2. May conduct home and hospital visits, providing nutrition counseling to County residents as needed for pregnant and postpartum women and mothers of infants and children.
3. Develops care plans for high risk participants of the eligible clients/patients providing referrals to additional resources when necessary.
4. Coordinates with other health professionals involved in client/patient care including physicians’ offices to request authorization for special formulas.
5. Promotes breastfeeding and assists clients/patients with breastfeeding questions and concerns. Assesses problems and counsels women in an effort to overcome breastfeeding challenges.
6. Teaches group nutrition education sessions. Develops nutrition lesson plans, nutrition education handouts, pamphlets, and visual aids. Reviews and updates nutrition education materials for use by the department.
7. May serve as part of an interdisciplinary team as the dietitian to prepare and manage team care plans for clients/patients.
8. May act as a preceptor for, and evaluate the performance of, Dietetic Interns.
9. Ensures that clinical documentation regarding clients is kept secure and confidential and maintained consistent with Health Department policies and procedures.
10. Participates in workshops, conferences, and other continuing education opportunities to maintain professional status as a Registered Dietitian status.
11. May perform the duties of a Nutrition Educator.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Must adhere to departmental standards in regard to HIPAA and other privacy issues.
• During a public health emergency, the employee may be required to perform duties similar to, but not limited, to those in his/her job description.

Employment Qualifications

Education: Possession of Registration as a Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Experience: Two years of professional experience as a Registered Dietitian (RD), preferably in a hospital or public health setting.

Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging, interacting and working with individuals from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, disability status’, ages, LGBTQIA+ status’ and genders to ensure clarity and understanding in all interactions.

• This position transports equipment to satellite clinics and outreach events.
• This position performs light work requiring the ability to exert 20 pounds or less of force in the physical requirements above.
• This position primarily requires close visual acuity to perform tasks within arm’s reach such as: viewing a computer screen, using measurement devices, inspecting and assembling parts, etc.
• This position requires the ability to communicate and respond to inquiries both in person and over the phone.
• This position requires the ability to operate a PC/laptop and to enter & retrieve information from a computer.
• This position requires the ability to handle varying and often high levels of stress.

1. This position works in both an indoor and outdoor environment. While indoors, there is no planned exposure to notable lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions. While outdoors, exposure to lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions cannot be controlled and may be extreme.
2. This position is exposed to communicable diseases, blood, other body fluids, etc.
3. This position is exposed to individuals in crisis. These individuals may suffer from mental or emotional illness, have violent tendencies or be unconcerned with their personal safety and hygiene.
4. This position is required to travel for meetings and appointments. Some appointments may be held at personal residences where levels of cleanliness and safety vary.
