SUMMARY: The Raptor Rehabilitation Coordinator (RRC) is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the Archie Kiogima Jr.-ba Migizi(eagle) Aviary Rehabilitation Center and provides evidence-based wildlife rehabilitation care for injured, sick and non-releasable birds of prey admitted to the center. The RRC utilizes knowledge of native raptor species and their ecology, good interpersonal and communication skills, and experience managing staff and volunteers to ensure the smooth operations of the Rehabilitation Center. The RRC contributes to all aspects of the rehabilitation program, partners with participating veterinary clinics and is responsible for all holding all appropriate Tribal, and Federal permits for eagles, raptors and non-raptor Aves rehabilitation. Coordinate and oversee all aspects of wildlife patient rescue, rehabilitation, release, and permanent resident care and health. This position provides staff with leadership and knowledge of rehabilitation protocols and medical care of eagles, raptors and other Aves. Supervises Rehabilitator Technicians, after hours Rescuers, Interns, and Volunteers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
·Performs triage, examinations and diagnostic procedures with incoming patients.
·Develops and implements patient treatment plans for rehabilitation patients in coordination with veterinarian/other raptor professionals input.
·Responsible for daily husbandry, exams, care, treatment of wildlife patients in care at Migizi(eagle) Aviary Rehabilitation Center.
·Conduct daily clinic rounds, treatments and direct care of all rehab patients.
·Perform/coordinate laboratory diagnostics with participating veterinarian.
·Calculate, dispense and administer medications as prescribed by veterinarians.
·Work with all animal care staff to determine final disposition of wild patients, to evaluate and ensure timely and appropriate release of rehabilitated wildlife patients or their humane euthanizing.
·Monitor, identify and perform enclosure and facility construction/maintenance needs, and assist in planning new operations programs.
·Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, maintenance and organization in the clinic and flight pens
·Ensure that protocols for infection/disease control are being followed by all staff, volunteers and interns.
·Assist in maintaining inventory and oversee the purchasing of animal diets and rehabilitation supplies within budget guidelines
·Manage the Archie Kiogima Jr.-ba Migizi(eagle) Aviary Rehabilitation Center budget.
·Oversee fundraising activities for the center.
·Responsible for training of technicians, volunteers and interns.
·Responsible for adherence to all facility animal care policies and procedures.
·Responsible for the required continuing education offered by state/federally recognized organizations (Minn Raptor Center, IWRC, NWRA, IAATE)
·Responsible for the accuracy of patient records, annual state and federal forms and individual drug use reporting.
·Provide community education/outreach regarding facility activities through the LTBB public events/meetings, LTBB newsletter, presentations, website and other relevant venues.
·Responsible for receiving, entering, logging and distributing eagle and other culturally significant parts to tribal members from the LTBB NRD Repository.
·Coordinate off-site rehab work including rescues, nest surveys, re-nesting and releases Assist in Migizi (eagle) research and management activities.
·Assist the department in sedation and trapping of other animals as related to movement studies or other such related research.
·Supervises Rehabilitator Technicians, after hours Rescuers, Interns, and Volunteers.
·Create and maintain a volunteer group for the Center.
·Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
-1-2 years of Raptor rehabilitation/raptor handling experience OR Certified Veterinary Technician/Veterinary Assistant with Laboratory experience OR
-A High School diploma with 6 years wildlife rehabilitation experience
-Must have IWRC or NWRA certification or be able to achieve certification within 1 year of employment.
-Must possess experience with data analysis and experience with Microsoft Office Programs (Access, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint and Word)
-Must be self-motivated, trustworthy and dependable
-Must possess excellent oral and written communication
-Must be detail-oriented
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions during all four seasons. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Minimum travel percentage: 0-20%.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid driver’s license, have reliable and be insurable for duration of employment. Must have current rabies pre-exposure vaccinations or willing to get the rabies pre-exposure vaccinations. Must obtain necessary education/experience to qualify for state/federal rehabilitation permits.
