Description
The City of Detroit's Department of Transportation (DDOT) is currently hiring Senior Transportation Service Inspector(s) for the DDOT Vehicle Operation Division.
Under general supervision, the Senior Transportation Service Inspector patrols assigned districts and observes that transportation service is operating on schedule; and makes necessary emergency adjustments to maintain adequate public transportation service.
Examples of Duties
Patrols in radio cars or on foot in assigned districts; or, patrols in radio cars or on foot in larger districts on the night shift.
Observes that departmental transportation units are operating on schedule.
Makes notes of unusually large groups of waiting passengers.
Observes variations in the numbers of passengers waiting for transportation at various times of the day.
Makes necessary adjustments in the service to meet changing needs.
Orders available extra coaches where the service is insufficient.
Reduces the number of coaches in order to prevent operation waste, as necessary.
Shortens the trips of coaches.
Holds over units to allow more even spacing or service.
Watches for defects in overhead construction and roadway.
Observes the condition of transportation equipment.
Notifies dispatcher of equipment breakdowns.
Goes to scene of all accidents involving transportation equipment in a district; and takes charge, gives aid, and reports results to superior and the Claims Division.
Reports employees who run ahead of or behind schedule.
Reports all service delays to superior.
Sees that all departmental rules and traffic laws are obeyed.
Reports to superior on the need for additional or reduced service in the district.
Observes that service is operating on schedule and adequately meets the transportation needs, at fixed points within a district for short periods of time.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
