Objectives
The Director/Sr. Director is a member of the R&D Global Portfolio and Project Management (GPPM) team and is responsible for leadership and development of a team of R&D project managers focusing on management of a portfolio of R&D development projects within an assigned B&L business vertical (e.g. Vision Care), as well as leadership/facilitation/ management of the new product development (NPD) governance board. The role ensures effective and consistent delivery of projects/programs utilizing project management methodologies and industry best practices through all stages/phases of development and lifecycle management. Project Management Leadership Team (PMLT) member and drives process and policy improvements and cross Business Unit (BU) collaborations and standardization.
The Director/Sr. Director will ensure all projects and programs within their assigned portfolio will have a robust global project strategy document, including understanding, and translating customer requirements into product requirements, development of the project valuation, global registration and launch planning, project scope, budget, resources, schedule, project risk management, and communication plan.
The Director/Sr. Director of Project Management will also mentor/GPPM staff and may lead Global Portfolio and Project Management (GPPM) or Research & Development (R&D) wide initiatives and special projects/programs.

Leadership & Team Development
Lead and manage a team of project managers, ensuring effective execution of projects and programs.
Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to GPPM staff.
Partner with HR to attract, retain, and develop high-performing talent.
Foster a high-performance, inclusive culture with a focus on continuous improvement.
Address performance issues constructively and directly when needed.
Strategic & Operational Oversight
Contribute to the GPPM vision as part of the Project Management Leadership Team (PMLT).
Ensure alignment of programs with strategic objectives through governance, tools, and standards.
Leverage product development, portfolio knowledge, and financial acumen for investment strategy and optimization.
Lead the NPD Governance Board to oversee project strategy and execution.
If Managing Highly Complex Programs:
Project & Portfolio Leadership
May lead cross-functional teams to develop and execute global product development strategies, including:
Project scope and schedule
Target Product Profile (TPP) and value drivers
Financial and risk analyses
Regulatory approvals and launch planning
IP strategy and functional execution planning
Act as Program Team Leader (PTL) or lead key GPPM, R&D, or companywide initiatives.
Use critical analysis and scenario planning to manage project complexity and uncertainty.
Resource & Risk Management
Develop and maintain resource plans; resolve conflicts to keep projects on track.
Guide teams through proactive risk management and contingency planning.
Ensure clear understanding of project interdependencies and communicate key risks and issues.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication
Work with Commercial, Operations, and R&D to ensure adequate project support.
Serve as a central point of communication for plans, status, and escalations across the organization.
Maintain accurate GPPM systems and deliver regular reports to support decision-making.
Governance & Compliance
Lead Business Gate Reviews to secure alignment on project progression.
Ensure adherence to SOPs, GMPs, design control, EHS standards, and regulatory requirements.
Promote use of lessons learned and best practices across teams.
Budget & Innovation
Manage portfolio budgets, prioritize projects to maximize value, and ensure financial discipline.
Support business development, due diligence, and partnerships as needed.
Champion innovative program and portfolio management practices to improve execution and speed to market.
Qualifications/Training
Education:
- BS/BA in Science or Engineering, advanced degree in science, engineering or business preferred.
Experience:
- 15+ years of Medical Device/Pharma industry experience and 10+ years experience in R&D Project Management and Leadership
Special Skills:
Strong communication, organization, and presentation skills required.
Computer Literacy with skills in MS Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint.
Specialized Training:
MS Project (or equivalent) preferred.
Project Management certification a plus.
Agile Methodologies preferred for software projects

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting pay for this role is between $175,000 - $210,000. The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors.
