The Bay County Department of Water & Sewer is seeking resumes from qualified persons for a Meter Reader at Bay County Department of Water and Sewer. This is a full-time union position.
The annual base salary for this position starts at $35,609 and progresses to $39,416 over 12 months, based on the 2025 fiscal year wage scale. Excellent fringe benefits include Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance plans, 13 paid holidays, generous paid sick and vacation, a defined benefit pension plan, and licensing/tuition reimbursement.
Qualifications include: High School Diploma and valid Michigan driver license with clean driving record.

JOB DESCRIPTION
METER READER
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Read water meters and record volume used by residential and commercial consumers. Respond to water related service calls by performing the following duties. Position reports to the Water Distribution Superintendent or their delegate.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Walks or drives established route and records meter reads.
- Obtains final reads for Customer Service.
- Delivers interoffice mail to/from the BAWTP and BCRC daily to the Administration Building.
- Assists Meter Reader/Technicians as needed.
- Lock buildings daily after business hours and will perform light janitorial services.
- Flag traffic for underground crew(s), following appropriate MDOT temporary traffic control guidelines.

THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES ARE REQUIRED ON THIS JOB:
- Ability to operate automotive equipment skillfully and safely.
- Ability to properly follow instructions and cooperate with others.
- Basic knowledge of computers and programs as MS Outlook and MS Word.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High School or Trade School graduate or equivalent on-the-job training and experience highly desirable.
GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written and/or oral instructions.
Make mathematical calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages.
Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License

Worker must adjust to situations involving doing things under specific instructions, must be able to adjust to situation and be able to adapt plans to fit circumstance(s).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Involves lifting heavy objects, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching and handling.
