GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Court Administrator, conducts investigations and prepares reports to assist the judge in determining the most appropriate sentencing of individuals brought before the court. Develops and implements treatment programs for individuals placed on probation or sobriety court in an effort to rehabilitate them and prevent future violations. Supervises an active caseload and manages the 74thDistrict Court Sobriety Court program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Investigate the background of people awaiting sentencing on District Court convictions, which include reviewing arrest, employment and other pertinent records. May include interviewing family, employers, school authorities, and others deemed necessary to prepare a pre-sentence recommendation to the judge.
2. Supervises an active caseload of probationers and participants in sobriety court.
3. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills to provide reports and recommendations to the court.
4. Assist clients with finding appropriate community treatment agencies, gaining employment, entering school, securing training to improve work skills, and other rehabilitative measures.
5. Provides a professional assessment of substance abuse problems in accordance with guidelines provided by the Office of Substance Abuse – Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
6. Works closely with other community agencies, i.e. State Court Administrative Office, Secretary of State, Interlock companies, police officers/agencies, and jail personnel.
7. Prepares progress reports on probationers as required; prepares recommendations for probation termination, probation violation, and related reports.
8. Verify attendance/progress for treatment or other terms of probation.
9. Monitor drug and/or alcohol testing results and interlock devices.
10. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal grants.
11. Monitors billing for grant.
12. Complete grant status reports as mandated by the State Court Administrative Office.
13. Ensures compliance with the grant certification and renewal process.
14. Responsible for entering necessary information into the court management system (JMS/JIS) and the State of Michigan grant system (DCCMIS).
15. Participate in training. (Travel required.)
16. May be required to assist with program development.
17. Appear in court for judicial hearings and reviews for both probation and sobriety court.
18. Consistent and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position.
19. All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, criminal justice, or related field. Certified Criminal Justice Professional (CCJP) or Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, or equivalent credential accepted by the State of Michigan. At least 6 months previous related experience in criminal justice, case management or social work preferred. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate and supervise probationers. Must be able to work independently and possess time management skills to work between different job responsibilities without direct daily supervision. Must submit fingerprint background check and become LEIN certified within 6 months of hire. Applicants may be required to take written and/or other examinations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (with or without reasonable accommodations) This position involves sitting most of the time and/or being mobile or standing for brief periods of time. Additional requirements include the ability to move objects according to the following weight & frequency: Generally, 10 pounds of force up to one third of the time.
