GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the guidance and direction of the Doctors of Optometry, responsible for demonstrating an understanding of the concepts used in Optometric care. Performs preliminary testing for comprehensive eye exams and contact lens care. Participates in a twelve (12) month specialized training program recognized by the Department of Labor (DOL) and receives experiential on-the-job training to prepare for the Certified Paraoptometric (CPO).
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform visual preliminary testing including but not limited to, these skill sets: auto-refraction, inter-ocular pressure, neutralizing prescription eyewear, blood pressure, visual acuity, motility testing, pupil assessment, confrontation fields, anterior chamber angle assessment, and dilation.
Apply critical thinking within the preliminary testing skills for the purpose of further testing needs. Applies anatomical and optics knowledge to care for the patient's visual needs.
Responsible to complete assigned online courses as scheduled.
Must sit for and receive notification of passing the Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) exam within 15 months of beginning the Optometric Assistant Apprentice program.
Responsible for accurate electronic medical record keeping.
Educate patients on contact lens handling, wearing schedule, and care.
Escort patients throughout the exam process and transfer authority to appropriate department.
Adhere to all compliance guidelines for all relative governing bodies.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
A high school diploma or GED
The ability to perform basic math skills
The ability to accurately enter information in electronic medical records
The ability to read and understand information presented in writing
The ability to listen and understand information, and the ability to communicate information so others will understand.
Previous patient care/customer service experience preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
Must complete the Optometric Assistant Apprenticeship Program recognized by the Department of Labor (DOL), test for and attain Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) with the timeframe designed in the Apprenticeship Program. Failure to attain and/or maintain certification will result in removal from the position.
Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities, standards and behaviors as outlined in the Henry Ford Health Customer Service Policy
Must practice the customer skills as provided through on-going training and in-services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal office environment with minimal exposure to noise, dust, or extreme temperatures.
Must be able to walk, bend and stand for extended periods of time.
Requires some local travel to Henry Ford OptimEyes locations using personal vehicle
