ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC TRAINER

Position Summary:
The Associate Athletic Trainer is a certified and licensed healthcare professional responsible for delivering comprehensive athletic training services to Central Michigan University (CMU ) intercollegiate student- athletes. This position plays an integral role within the Sports Medicine team and reports to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training from an accredited institution.
Three years of full-time experience as a certified athletic trainer.
Certified Athletic Trainer in good standing with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC ).
Current licensure, as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Michigan, or eligibility for licensure upon hire.
Current CPR /AED certification for the healthcare provider or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally with student-athletes, coaches, and healthcare professionals.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities.
Willingness and availability to travel and work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, or a related field.
Four years of full-time experience as a certified athletic trainer.
Experience as a certified athletic trainer at the professional, Olympic, national team, or NCAA Division I collegiate level.
Extensive background in the rehabilitation of both surgical and non- surgical upper and lower extremity injuries.
Advanced certifications such as Graston Technique, Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM ), Active Release Techniques (ART ), Certified
Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS ), Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES ), or Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES ).
Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR ) and injury tracking software (e.g., ATS , Healthy Roster, SportsWare).
Demonstrated supervisory experience in a clinical or athletic training setting.
Proven ability to mentor and support the development of athletic training students, graduate assistants, interns, and/or professional staff members.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Athletic Training & Student-Athlete Care:
Serves as the primary Certified Athletic Trainer for assigned intercollegiate athletic team(s), providing comprehensive healthcare services.
Provides comprehensive athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation for orthopedic and non-orthopedic conditions.
Provides care to additional teams as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.
Coordinates individualized care plans in consultation with the Medical Director and team physicians.
Develops and supervises both surgical and non-surgical rehabilitation programs for student-athletes.
Facilitates outside medical referrals and manages in-house orthopedic and physician clinics.
Documents all medical services and interactions in the department’s electronic injury tracking system, including treatments, progress notes, imaging, and physician communications.
Retrieves and organizes outside medical records as needed for continuity of care.
Collaboration & Communication:
Maintains consistent communication with coaching staff, strength and conditioning personnel, and team physicians regarding student-athlete health statuses, progress, and participation limitations.
Coordinates with Student-Athlete Services to manage academic accommodations and resolve potential class conflicts for injured student-athletes.
Collaborates with the insurance coordinator regarding medical claims and acts as the point of contact for insurance-related needs of assigned team(s).
Develops modified training plans for injured student-athletes in coordination with the strength and conditioning staff.
Provides timely updates to relevant athletic department personnel on student-athlete limitations, return-to-play timelines, and medical accommodations.
Program Administration & Operations:
Oversees ordering, inventory, and maintenance of medical supplies, equipment, and training room facilities.
Supports the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in implementing program development and departmental initiatives.
Participates in the execution of institutional and NCAA Substance Abuse Control Program policies.
Ensures all policies, procedures, and best practices established by the CMU Sports Medicine Department are upheld.
Leads the annual review, update, and development of Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
Serves as a liaison to Risk Management and oversees emergency medical equipment and preparedness.
Assists with the recruitment, onboarding, and supervision of entry level staff members.
Compliance & Record Keeping:
Adheres to all HIPAA and FERPA regulations, ensuring confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive information.
Ensures compliance with NCAA , Mid-American Conference (MAC ), and university standards and policies.
Additional Duties:
Participates in departmental meetings, continuing education, and professional development.
Performs other duties as assigned.
