Compensation Details
Starting salary is dependent on education, directly related experience and internal equity. After completing the second probationary semester, the potential exists to earn additional compensation by teaching overload and spring/summer sessions. This additional compensation varies based on several factors, including educational level and step. For example, a faculty member with a Master' s degree at Step 0 who teaches 10 hours of overload during the fall and winter semesters would earn an additional $18,000. Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job:
Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness. As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications. In addition, full-time faculty have the following key responsibilities which are described more fully below in the Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities section:

Specific Teaching Assignment:
Faculty member will be responsible for teaching classes in Communication with the primary emphasis being Public Speaking. Other possible teaching assignments might include courses such as Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Survey of Human Communication, or Persuasion.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Faculty are sometimes called upon to perform quasi-supervisory responsibilities, particularly in their role as Coordinators.
Minimum Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill,
and/or ability required.
Master's degree in Communication, Communication Studies, Rhetoric, Interpersonal Communication, or a related degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in rhetoric, argumentation, interpersonal, intercultural, small group, or organizational communication.
Previous post-secondary level teaching experience.
Teaching experience in Public Speaking.
Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission, and philosophy.
Innovative, flexible, and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
Familiarity with use of computer-based instruction, distance learning, learning technologies, competency-based instruction, and modularized courseware.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions, to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
