The City of Escanaba is currently accepting applications for a part-time position of
Library Assistant II- Youth Services. Minimum qualifications include a high school
diploma or equivalent. Experience working with children or teens in a library, educational or
recreational setting. The ideal candidate should have strong interpersonal and communication
skills, computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, and a willingness to work evenings and
weekends. Residency within 20 radius miles of the Escanaba City limits is required.
GENERAL PURPOSE
The Youth Services Assistant supports the mission of the library by assisting in the planning,
promotion, and implementation of programs and services for children, teens, and families. This
position involves direct interaction with young patrons, assistance with collection maintenance,
and providing excellent customer service in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Work is performed under the supervision of the Library Director and Adult Services Librarian. The
Library Assistant II does not supervise staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to perform any of the essential functions listed
below. Examples below do not include all the duties which the employee may be expected to
perform.
• Perform circulation duties at all library service desks and the drive-up window, including
checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, collecting fines, processing holds, and
handling phone and email inquiries.
• Assist patrons with the use of library technology, including computers, printers, scanners,
copiers and microfilm readers.
• Assist with the development, setup, and delivery of youth programs, including storytimes,
crafts, STEM activities, teen events, and summer reading initiatives.
• Collaborate with local schools, daycare centers, and homeschool groups to support literacy
initiatives, promote library services, and deliver outreach programs.
• Demonstrate and promote the library’s digital resources and technology to families,
caregivers, and educators including eBooks, databases, and educational apps.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with community organizations serving youth and
families to extend library services and promote community engagement.
• Help maintain and organize youth collections, including shelving, shifting, weeding, and
merchandising displays.
• Assist with marketing and promotion of youth services, including creating flyers, bulletin
boards, and displays under supervision.
• Help maintain program statistics and records for reporting and evaluation purposes.
• Attend and participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
