The Charter Township of Redford is accepting applications for a full-time position of Seasonal Playground Counselor. Under the supervision of the Recreation Program Manager this employee will work with our seasonal playground program to provide daily activities to youth within the program and ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants.
General Counselors:
- Safely supervise children through daily activities.
- Assist in set up, tear down, and clean up of all program activities, supplies, and equipment.
- Reinforce positive behaviors and teach proper sportsmanship.
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementation of daily activities.
- Acknowledge different learning styles and meet the needs of each participant
- Positively engage, interact and develop strong relationships with children, parents and staff.
- Supervise participants on weekly field trips and special events.
- Assist in filling out site records including first aid and incident reports.
- Assist with the Summer food program when needed.
Lead Counselor:
In addition to the above:
- Responsible for developing, planning, and implementing program activities.
- Directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program and working with counselors on daily activities.
- Ensures staff members comply with policies and procedures and reports to Recreation Program Manager an issues or concerns.
- Organizes and maintains daily paperwork and incident reports.
- Responsible for communication efforts to keep parents informed of activities, policies, and incidents.
- Responsible for keeping the Recreation Program Manager informed of the program and any problems.
- Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Employees must be available to work the entire program from mid-June to the beginning of August.
Experience:
- Experience working or volunteering with children ages 6-13, preferably in a recreation or educational setting.
- Lead counselor must have experience noted above as well as experience with overseeing additional staff and youth programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in both indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Work includes travel to different locations and employees may be exposed to inclement weather conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery and uneven surfaces.
Physically, functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a recreational facility setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate cleaning equipment; to travel to other recreation sites; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
