Summary
The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the planning, scheduling, marketing, and daily operations of recreational programs and activities. This position ensures the optimal use of campus recreation facilities and addresses the needs of both the university community and surrounding public. The Coordinator supervises student employees and volunteers and acts as a liaison among program staff, parents, and department leadership
Responsibilities and Essential Duties
1. Support the overall operations of Recreational Programs, including-but not limited to-Intramural Sports, sports camps, leagues, special events, general programming, marketing, and communications.
2. Plan, schedule, and coordinate a diverse range of recreational programs and special events across multiple facilities to meet the varied interests of students and community members.
3. Oversee the daily operations and usage of recreational facilities, ensuring safety, efficiency, and adherence to established procedures.
4. Develop and implement marketing and communication strategies to enhance program visibility, participation, and engagement.
5. Learn, utilize, and provide staff training on the department's recreational software system (DSE).
6. Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise student staff and volunteers, ensuring effective team performance and customer service.
7. Serve as the primary point of contact for participants, parents, staff, and department leadership, responding to inquiries, concerns, and feedback in a timely and professional manner.
8. Monitor and assess program effectiveness, recommending and implementing improvements to better meet participant needs and increase satisfaction.
9. Assist with budget planning, monitoring, and financial tracking for assigned programs and activities.
10. Ensure compliance with university policies, safety protocols, and risk management procedures across all programs and facilities.
11. Collaborate with campus departments and external organizations to strengthen and expand recreational offerings and partnerships.
12. Maintain flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed; serve as the on-call building manager one weekend per month.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures
* Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Sports Administration, Physical Education, or a related field.
* Possess a current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
Required Experience
* 1-3 years of relevant experience in recreation program management, event planning, or facility operations.
* Strong knowledge of sports rules and officiating procedures.
* Demonstrated ability to effectively work with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
* Proven marketing skills, including experience developing strategies to enhance program visibility and participant engagement.
* Experience working with part-time staff, student employees, or volunteers.
* Familiarity with recreational management software and related tools for program administration and reporting.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
* Master's degree in Recreation Management, Sports Administration, Physical Education, or a closely related field.
* 1-3 years of relevant experience in recreation program management, event planning, or facility operations within a university setting.
* Familiarity with Michigan Technological University and its recreational programming is strongly preferred.
* Knowledge of youth sports programming.
* Experience participating in, coaching, or officiating collegiate-level athletics.
* Demonstrated experience in the direct supervision of student staff, including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.

* Ideal candidates will possess strong leadership, organizational and communication skills, team building and decision-making ability.
* A working computer knowledge using Microsoft Office and Adobe products in a Windows/network environment and the ability to learn new computer systems and processes.
* Ability to control and provide services to diverse groups of people of all ages.
* Strong skills in program marketing, outreach, and community engagement.
* Knowledge and experience with safety and risk management and best practices in recreation operations.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
* Demonstrated commitment to contributing to a safe work environment.
* Ability to work a variable schedule, which may include early mornings or evenings, as well as weekends and nights, and the ability to attend on and off campus events.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
* Proficiency in recreation management software (e.g., DSE) is preferred.
* Demonstrated knowledge and ability in officiating various sports, scheduling, and sports rules.
