This position is 4-month internship program which prepares the new Graduate nurse for a Registered Nurse position in 5D-SICU. Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted bedside clinical experience. A two (2) year commitment with a minimum of 36 hours/week (0.9 FTE) to the SICU is required after the completion of the 16-18 weeks of the orientation period. The orientation period will be a combination of day and nightshifts to meet orientation and learning needs. The nursing position will be a night shift position upon completion of the externship and orientation period.
5D Surgical Intensive Care Unit: The SICU is a 20 bed adult intensive care unit caring for patients who have had major operations or those experiencing complications requiring extensive physiological monitoring. Typically this encompasses those patients with peripheral vascular diseases, cancer, hepatic, pancreatic or renal failure, cardiac and pulmonary disease. Often these patients present with multi-system failure requiring swan ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition and fluid and electrolyte corrections. In addition, SICU receives adult liver transplants and is a major referral center for adult ECMO/Respiratory failure patients. This ICU also may receive overflow from the Trauma, Neuro, Medicine and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. SICU charge nurses participate as adult Rapid Response Providers through out the University Hospital. SICU offers 12 hour night shifts, comprehensive orientation, career development and the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population. - The candidate must be a Graduate Nurse or a newly licensed in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse. The candidate must not have yet practiced as a Registered Nurse.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date for those hired as a Graduate Nurse.
