Position Summary: The Volunteer Engagement Manager supports the strategic vision of the Director of Volunteer Services by leading the day-to-day operations of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park's volunteer program. This role ensures smooth implementation of recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and engagement efforts across all departments. This role provides direct supervision of the Volunteer Program Specialist and ensures alignment between volunteer support and organizational goals.
Essential Functions
- Lead the transition to a centralized volunteer services model, ensuring consistency across all departments.
- Manage volunteer scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage across departments and events.
- Oversee all stages of the volunteer lifecycle, including recruitment, training, assignment, management, retention, and sunsetting.
- Organize volunteer recruitment events and outreach campaigns to build pipelines of diverse candidates.
- Support the design and delivery of volunteer training programs, manuals, and documentation.
- Develop and maintain the Volunteer Handbook and all required legal paperwork related to volunteer participation.
- Conduct volunteer orientations and assist with onboarding across all departments.
- Facilitate employee training on volunteer engagement and support talent transitions when necessary.
- Collaborate with department leads and managers to identify volunteer needs, align placement, and ensure volunteers are properly trained for their areas of service.
- Maintain and manage the volunteer database, ensuring accurate tracking of hours, availability, and participation trends.
- Coordinate volunteer recognition efforts through the tracking and reporting of service hours.
- Plan and execute logistics for volunteer recognition and appreciation events.
- Communicate volunteer opportunities, updates, and announcements regularly.
- Provide monthly and annual reports on volunteer participation, engagement, and impact metrics.
- Maintain the Volunteer Center and volunteer communication boards.
- Network with other volunteer managers and organizations to stay informed of trends and best practices in volunteerism.
- Organize and facilitate monthly Volunteer Services Committee meetings in collaboration with the Board Governance Coordinator.
- Implement technology solutions where appropriate to improve volunteer program processes.
- Manage volunteer-related budget line items and monitor expenses.
- Supervise the daily activities and performance of the Volunteer Program Specialist.
- Provide seamless coverage for Volunteer Services Director duties as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Volunteer Services.
Education and / or Qualifications preferred:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience in nonprofit management, human resources, or a related field.
- Experience: At least two years of supervisory experience, with a focus on volunteer coordination, people management, or a related area preferred. Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with diverse individuals and groups. Exceptional written, verbal, and active listening skills. Proven ability to prioritize tasks, stay organized, problem-solve calmly, adapt to change, and maintain confidentiality.

Manage occasional lifting tasks, and ability to handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds with ease and regularity. This job operates in a professional indoor office environment, across grounds, and exhibition areas. Occasionally, may be required to work outdoors under inclement weather conditions. Occasional assignment to off-shift or weekend duties.
