Electrical/Mechanical Maintenance Specialist I
Purpose and Scope:
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the Water Treatment Plant is able to provide reliable, efficient and safe supply of domestic and industrial grade water that meets or exceed all state and federal water standards. The incumbent accomplishes this through a variety of electrical and skilled maintenance duties to keep plant equipment, facilities, pump stations and all other related items operating at peak efficiency.
The incumbent Installs, maintains and troubleshoots all aspects of the Water Treatment Plant electrical systems including power distribution up to 4160 volts, computer controls, motors up to 500HP and instrumentation. Installs, maintains and troubleshoots all plant mechanical equipment including pumps, conveyors, valves, solenoids, gearboxes, and chemical dosing equipment.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- State of Michigan Journeymen Electrician license.
- A minimum of three years industrial electrical experience of similar scope and size as the City of Midland Water Treatment plant. Two years of instrumentation experience also required.
- Demonstrated working knowledge and hands on experience with high voltage industrial equipment.
- Working knowledge of PLC and Relay logic experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in mechanical and maintenance work, including strong knowledge of tools and methods to perform water plant maintenance work. Must have strong aptitude for mathematics, reading diagrams and interpreting electrical schematics.
- Highly effective and creative problem solving skills in a technically complex environment.
- Ability to carry out assignments both independently and as part of a work group. Ability to lead a work group and achieve results.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, stay organized and balance conflicting deadlines with unforeseen events.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully, both in writing and verbally.
- Ability to set and work within a budget to reach project goals.
Other Requirements of the Job:
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Michigan and must maintain a good driving record as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to successfully pass City safety and equipment training programs as required.
Electrical/Mechanical Maintenance Specialist II
Purpose and Scope:
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure reliable, efficient and safe electrical and mechanical systems to meet the infrastructure needs of the City. The incumbent accomplishes this through a variety of electrical and skilled maintenance duties to keep plant equipment, facilities, pump stations, traffic signals and all other related items operating at peak efficiency.
An employee in this class performs electrical, mechanical and instrument repair and maintenance of equipment at an assigned department, including: water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, pumping stations, wastewater lift stations, water distribution systems, the landfill, gas to energy and pipeline system, and in the installation and maintenance of the traffic signal system. The incumbent also maintains equipment in other City buildings and facilities as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- State of Michigan Master Electrician license (requires 12,000 hours obtained over minimum 6 years related to construction, maintenance or industrial equipment and passing state licensing exam).
- A minimum of five years industrial electrical experience of similar scope and size as the City of Midland electrical systems. Two years of instrumentation experience also required.
- Demonstrated working knowledge and hands on experience with high voltage industrial equipment.
- Working knowledge of PLC and Relay logic experience. Ability to learn specialized computer software, such as traffic control software.
- Demonstrated proficiency in mechanical and maintenance work, including strong knowledge of tools and methods to perform water plant maintenance work. Must have strong aptitude for mathematics, reading diagrams and interpreting electrical schematics.
- Highly effective and creative problem solving skills in a technically complex environment.
- Ability to carry out assignments both independently and as part of a work group. Ability to lead a work group and achieve results.

- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Michigan and must maintain a good driving record as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid CDL-B license.
- Must be able to successfully pass City safety and equipment training programs as required.
Salary
EMI: MMEA Pay Grade 13: $27.56-$35.09 per hour
EMII: MMEA Pay Grade 14: $31.20 - $39.73 per hour
