Summary
The Veterans Affairs Manager leads Calhoun County’s efforts to support and advocate for military veterans and their families. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Community Development, this position manages the day-to-day operations and strategic oversight of Calhoun County Veterans Affairs. The Manager provides guidance, education, and resources to veterans; administers funding and benefit programs; supervises and files claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs; and works collaboratively with local, state, and federal partners to promote policies and services that benefit the veteran community.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage Veterans Affairs operations while providing departmental leadership and cooperation with the Office of Community Development.
- Supervise and support Veterans Affairs staff, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, and professional development.
- Develop and manage the department budget and oversee day-to-day office operations.
- Ensure quality service delivery and compliance with relevant policies, standards, and regulations.
- Provide individualized support to veterans and their dependents regarding available benefits, programs, and services.
- Administer and monitor the County Veterans Relief Fund and Veterans Burial Fund.
- Represent veterans’ interests before various agencies and appeal boards as needed.
- Strategize on the best use of County Veterans Millage and grant funds to address critical gaps in available services and ensure that underserved needs are met to enhance overall service delivery within the veteran community.
- Track outcomes and prepare reports demonstrating program impact and community benefit.
- Educate the public and stakeholders about veterans issues and available resources, and participate in events, community education campaigns, and commemorative observances.
- Stay informed about new and evolving state and federal legislation affecting veterans.
- Advise County leadership, the Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Board of Commissioners on relevant issues and opportunities.
- Foster partnerships with government agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations to strengthen veteran services.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required or combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position
- Four or more years of experience working with veterans, benefit programs, or public service systems including at least two years of supervisory experience
- Veterans are encouraged to apply. Lived experience as a veteran is considered an asset in this role
- Ability to obtain accreditation as a Veterans Service Officer (VSO), as well as a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs within one year of employment
- Leadership and supervisory skills
- Oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills including presentation skills
- Time management, organizational, and budget management skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software and relevant case management or service tracking software
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position provides direct supervision including hiring, discipline, training/development, and termination of up to 1-4 employees.

This role is primarily sedentary office work with occasional travel for outreach, events, or training. May occasionally require extended hours or weekend availability for emergencies, meetings, or special events.
