Job Title: Probation Officer/WMDCP Court Coordinator

SUMMARY: The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) is a sovereign Indian Tribe whose primary government building is in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The Tribal Court is a court of general jurisdiction hearing cases including, but not limited to: criminal, civil, drug court, domestic violence, and children welfare cases. The LTBB Tribal Court is looking for a person with a probation officer background who wants to do more than compliance, but who instead wants to help people change their lives for the better. The WMDCP Court Coordinator does this by running the Tribal Court’s healing-to-wellness court program and probation program.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree required in criminal justice, social work, law enforcement, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, or related field. These candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a probation officer and must have completed a recognized probation officer training program. Experience working with a specialty court preferred. Experience managing and/or implementing grant awards required.
Alternatively, candidates may have an Associate’s degree required in criminal justice, social work, law enforcement, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, or related field. These candidates must have a minimum of three years’ experience as a probation officer and must have completed a recognized probation officer training program. Experience working with a specialty court preferred.
Alternatively, candidates must have a minimum of ten years’ experience as a probation officer and must have completed a recognized probation officer training program. Experience working with a specialty court preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have valid Michigan driver’s license and be insurable for duration of employment. Must have reliable transportation and be willing to transport clients as needed. Must be willing to successfully complete the certification process for juvenile probation officers and caseworkers provided by the Michigan Judicial Institute and also successfully complete the certification process for the PBT equipment used by Tribal Court. Must be able to meet the requirements of 25 U.S.C. 3207(b)) or its successor statute related to qualifications of individuals working with Indian children.
COMMENTS: Indian preference will apply. Individuals must pass a thorough background investigation, including criminal and employment, with no felony convictions in the last ten years. Individuals must pass an initial drug screen and random drug screening if hired.

The Tribe is governed by a nine-member Tribal Council who serve staggered terms.
