Will be working fulltime onsite at the Chelsea Proving Grounds through an engineering supplier. Must be willing to help support winter and summer road trips as well, a few trips per year.
Description
The Emission Calibration Engineer for GPF systems is responsible for optimizing their performance to meet emissions regulations while ensuring drivability and durability.
Key Areas of Focus:
GPF Calibration: Develop and refine regeneration strategies (temperature, soot, frequency) for optimal particulate filtration and system efficiency, considering interactions with other emission control components.
Emission Control Calibration (Beyond GPF):
Catalyst Calibration: Develop and optimize control strategies for various catalytic converters (e.g., TWC, SCR, DOC), including light-off temperature control, air-fuel ratio optimization, and temperature management to maximize conversion efficiency of gaseous pollutants (HC, CO, NOx).
Oxygen Sensor Calibration: Ensure accurate and reliable oxygen sensor signals and integrate them effectively into the engine control system for precise air-fuel ratio control and catalyst monitoring.
EGR System Calibration: Develop and calibrate Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems to reduce NOx emissions, optimizing flow rates and cooler performance across the engine operating range while considering impacts on combustion stability and particulate matter.
Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Calibration (for Emissions): Optimize VVT strategies to improve combustion efficiency, reduce pumping losses, and enhance the performance of other emission control devices across different engine speeds and loads.
Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Calibration: Develop and calibrate SAI systems to accelerate catalyst light-off during cold starts, reducing initial emissions.
Peripheral Controls Calibration (Emissions Related):
Engine Temperature Management: Calibrate the cooling system (thermostat, fan control) to ensure optimal operating temperatures for efficient combustion and effective emission control system performance.
Intake Air Temperature and Humidity Compensation: Develop calibration strategies to compensate for variations in intake air temperature and humidity to maintain consistent emissions performance.
Fuel System Calibration (Emissions Impact): Collaborate with fuel injection engineers to ensure precise fuel delivery and atomization, which directly impacts combustion quality and emissions.
Throttle Control Calibration (Emissions Considerations): Optimize throttle response and airflow management, considering its influence on combustion and the performance of emission control devices.
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) Calibration: Develop and validate OBD strategies to monitor the performance of all emission control systems, including the GPF and peripheral components, and ensure accurate detection of malfunctions.
