Summary: The School of Communications at Grand Valley State University is seeking an effective teacher and communication generalist to join the faculty during the 2025-2026 academic year. This is a full-time, Visiting Faculty of Instruction position (non-tenure track). The successful candidate should have disciplinary training that aligns with one or more of the following major programs in the School: Communication Studies and/or Journalism, Broadcasting, and Digital Media. The unit places a premium on the abilities and skills of the applicant to successfully contribute to and complement the strong teaching of the current faculty within a range of courses. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.
Required Qualifications and Education:
• A master's degree in Advertising, Public Relations, Communication, Journalism, or a closely related field is required. A candidate possessing a bachelor's degree in one of these fields plus considerable professional experience in the media industry will also be considered.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the collegiate level is required.
• Experience in or demonstrated understanding of broadcast and/or print media.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
• A Ph.D. in Advertising, Public Relations, Communication, Journalism, or a closely related field, or a J.D. with experience in communication law
Responsibilities:
• Teach courses across the undergraduate communication curriculum. Potential courses include: Media History, Media Literacy, Communication Law (graduate and/or undergraduate), Media and Society, News and Society, Issues in Journalism.
• Typical teaching load is twelve credit hours (usually four courses) per semester.
Salary/Benefits: The salary is $50,000.
