Description
Under general supervision, operates and maintains portable and self-propelled construction machines.
Examples of Duties
Operates construction equipment consistent with departmental standards and procedures.
Operates construction equipment in a variety of construction and maintenance projects, including, but not limited to, backfilling trenches; grading and leveling construction sites; loading and unloading materials; stripping soil from construction sites; and laying, finishing or refinishing asphalt.
Coordinates with grounds crews the efficient sequence of operations.
Changes attachments on equipment.
Performs field adjustments on equipment.
Performs minor maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, cleaning and servicing with gasoline, diesel fuel, water, oil, and grease.
Directs the activities of helpers assisting in construction activities.
Repairs and/or assists in overhauling construction equipment during inclement weather or as required.
Performs duties in accordance with department safety procedures including, but not limited to, the utilization of designated personal protective equipment.
Performs demolition of site equipment, fencing, and various other blighted or outdated components.
Assists building trades workers in constructing or deconstructing when heavy equipment is needed for installation or removal.
Operates heavy equipment to move boulders or other landscape products.
Loads, unloads and secures equipment from trucks and trailers safely.
Hauls equipment and trailer with a dump truck, pick-up truck or other appropriate vehicle.
Hauls and dumps debris at appropriate disposal/recycling locations.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or GED, preferably completion of two years in a trade or vocational high school.
Two years of experience operating portable, self-propelled construction machines and one year of experience maintaining and repairing construction machinery.
NOTE: The pre-existing education requirement (completion of eight grades of schooling) will apply to current employees promoted or certified to this classification who were affiliated with Teamsters Local 214 in a classification listed in the Teamsters' Craft Unit Schedule as of the date of the specification's adoption (4/16/2012).

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
