Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Tribal School Principal, work with teaching staff, administrators, students, parents, and other team members to assist and support in providing cultural and educational benefit for students. All education staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide assistance to students by utilizing culturally responsive, trauma-informed, resiliency-informed strategies determined by the classroom teacher in their daily classroom activities.
- Provide small group and individual instruction with materials as determined by the classroom teacher.
- Provide assistance to students during unstructured times of day.
- Assist students in the use of technology or equipment and instructional materials.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, well-organized classroom environment.
- Prepare and create instructional materials as determined by the classroom teacher.
- Participate in in-service training.
- Assist in the safe transportation of students by riding the bus, making sure seat belts are secure, and assist children on and off the bus.
- Attend school-wide extra-curricular, parent and community meetings, activities and events.
- Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and all other privacy regulations.
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
- Contact with other school staff members, officials, parents, students and the general public to obtain, clarify or give facts concerning students or school activities as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Pass a state or local exam (i.e. Basic Skills Test of Michigan for Teacher Certification or ETS ParaPro Assessment); OR
- Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 semester hours);
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working with children in a school setting.
- Knowledge of and experience Ojibwe Language.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- CPR and First Aid Certification within three months of hire.
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Skill in administering disciplinary rules to children and resolving situational conflicts among children.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to be organized and effectively listen to and respond to inquiries.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
- Ability to have patience and work interactively with children.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions and exercise appropriate judgment.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
- Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally sit, bend, lift, and stoop.
- Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
