JOB SUMMARY
Growers are responsible for overseeing the healthy and Earth-Friendly cultivation of a diverse variety of perennial plants in greenhouse and outdoor growing areas. Most of the growing is in containers and to a lesser degree the position involves caring for in-ground stock plants. Growers also provide timely and valuable feedback on the physical condition of our inventory to our sales team. He/She, as the Grower, is service minded and values working collaboratively as a team, typically on-site, with a traditional Monday- Friday work week so as to be available to, responsive and supportive of colleagues and customers.
RESPONSIBILITES
- Day to day irrigation – including working every third weekend and 2-3 holidays per year (typically not full days).
- Monitoring and implementing procedures: Fertility monitoring and fertilization; growth management including pruning and staking; sorting and spacing; mulching and weeding, scouting for pests and diseases and conducting preventative and irridicant applications of pesticides (minimal) and bio-controls.
- Leading a small team (usually 2 teammates) to keep the plants in healthy and ideal condition.
- Continuous improvement in all aspects of staff development, plant care, and facility care.
- Influence continual improvement of standardized production and cultural procedures through timely feedback and suggestions.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Associate’s degree in horticulture or comparable education/experience.
- Valid MI driver’s license.
- Michigan Certified Nurseryman is a plus.
- Preferably has worked 2+ years as a grower.

- Continual Learner, must become familiar with all of our plants, their respective pruning specifications, disease and pest problems, and biological, physical, environmental, and chemical controls team mated with their culture.

- Commits to horticulture as his or her career and has a strong interest in biology.
- Must be self-directed, perceptive, responsible, timely and precise.
