The Maintenance Electrician performs industrial electrical maintenance and installation of equipment on electrical systems at all of the college’s facilities. The work involves the technical application of electrical principles and automated controls. This role requires high-level problem-solving skills and extensive experience working with industrial electrical systems. Effective communication skills and the ability to resolve issues quickly and efficiently are essential.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Work Monday through Friday, day shift, to maintain systems necessary for the operation of campus facilities for students, faculty, and staff.
- Plan daily work activities, understand priorities, and direct other electricians as assigned.
- Request equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability of necessary items for installation and repairs.
- Work with the Delta College Planning Team to monitor electrical work performed by outside contractors, ensuring compliance with Delta specifications and applicable codes/standards.
- Inspect electrical systems and components to evaluate conditions, identify necessary repairs, and recommend preventive maintenance.
- Work on 480/277V and 208/120V distribution systems, including occasional transfer of primary power (8,320V) from one source to another using existing switchgear.
- Recognize potential dangers of working with energized equipment/systems and select the appropriate PPE to safely perform tasks.
- Troubleshoot complex problems and low-voltage control systems, analyzing blueprints, schematics, and drawings to determine the most efficient repair and installation processes.
- Utilize department software to complete material requisitions, emails, scheduling, equipment programming, inventory tracking, work order documentation, and report generation.
- Communicate with supervisors and other trades to efficiently complete projects and work orders.
- Install electrical equipment and components, utilizing appropriate power tools for:
- Indoor/outdoor lighting
- Low-voltage controls
- Receptacles and switches
- Alarm systems
- Power distribution panels
- Conduits
- Scoreboards and parking lot gates
- Building controls and automation devices
- Maintain electrical equipment and tools to ensure safe operating conditions.
- Repair/replace electrical components and systems, including motors, system controllers, transformers, door operators, lighting, clocks, and kitchen equipment.
- Occasionally required to work after hours or when the College is closed to monitor contract work, complete projects in unoccupied spaces, or respond to emergency situations.
- Maintain electrical shop, distribution rooms, and work areas, including cleaning, organizing, and trash removal.
- Work with limited supervision and coordinate with other support resources within the department as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Journeyman Electrical License from the State of Michigan.
- Minimum 10 years of experience as an institutional, educational, and/or industrial maintenance electrician.
- Ability to compile, maintain, and process required logs and records for accurate material and labor reporting.
- Experience with low-voltage communications, security systems, fire alarm systems, and commercial controls.
- Knowledge and understanding of applicable local and state codes, rules, and standards.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Strong mathematical background.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, specifications, and instructional manuals.
- Ability to work alone with minimal supervision or as a member of a team.
- Experience working in elevated environments using powered lifts, platforms, ladders, and scaffolding.
- Physically capable of performing all duties within the classification.
- Basic computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office applications.
Additional Experiences Considered
- Associate’s Degree with a focus in the electrical field.
- Master Electrician License from the State of Michigan.
- Certification to operate lifts, boom trucks, and elevated platforms.
