GENERAL SUMMARY:
Oversees laboratory operations in multiple technical disciplines on a regular basis with
minimal supervision. Performs routine and complex analytic procedures in the
preparation of human tissue samples, body fluids, and cultured cells for histological
examination using manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and
information systems. Teaches routine and specialized laboratory techniques. Ensures
standard work. Participates in applied research and development projects. Involved in
onboarding, competency assessment, and quality improvement.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees and performs routine and complex histological procedures on human
tissue, body fluids, and cultured cells, using manual or automated techniques and
information systems. The Sr. Histotechnologist is qualified to perform all duties of
the Sr. Histotechnologist job, and in a given job situation may or may not perform all
of the duties; actual duties will pertain to the specific Sr. Histotechnologist position.
Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or
develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes and
resolve problems.
a. Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work with consistent quality
and corrective and preventive action as needed.
b. Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure
accuracy and reliability prior to release;
c. Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states;
d. Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and/or physiologic causes
of unexpected test results.
Develops and establishes standard operating procedures for routine and advanced
histology applications, such as special stain techniques, muscle histochemistry,
direct immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and
electron microscopy.
Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of technical
equipment in multiple workstations. Following successful completion of competency
testing, may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision.
Assists in the correction of technical problems and serves as a technical resource
redirecting the workflow or assignments as necessary to ensure proper coverage
and service standards. May prepare staffing schedules.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
? Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university with a combination of at
least 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry
? Three (3) years of experience with progressive responsibility in a CAP accredited
histology laboratory setting
? Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform,
teach, and lead laboratory functions
? Familiarity with Lean principles and methods preferred
? Vision: Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
? Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships.
? Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.
? Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to perform
job functions.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
? Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Histology
Technologist (HTL) required.
? For Sr. Histotechnologist in Immunohistochemistry, Qualification in
Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) by ASCP preferred.
