Skilled Laborer
The City of Escanaba is seeking one qualified applicant for the full-time position of
Skilled Laborer in the Water/Wastewater Department. Essential job functions include the
following:
? Identify, locate and repair leaks.
? Maintain, test and repair fire hydrants, stop gates, and other valves.
? Install and tap water service connections of various sizes.
? Install maintain, chlorinate and repair water mains.
? Maintain wells.
? Locate and mark buried distribution water lines and valves.
? Maintain records on valves, curb stops, and hydrants.
? Requisition materials and equipment.
? Communicate with customers regarding service interruptions and related issues.
? Restore streets lawns and sidewalks after excavation.
? Perform Customer Service work as required.
? Perform maintenance at both water and wastewater plants.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma and a valid Michigan Driver’s license.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within six (6) months
of hire.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Repair, maintenance and installation of mains, valves, hydrants, water/sewer services, and to
perform related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Water/Wastewater Superintendent or designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None generally, may occasionally supervise seasonal workers or co-op students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
?Identify, locate and repair leaks.
?Maintain, test and repair fire hydrants, stop gates, and other valves.
?Install and tap water service connections of various sizes.
?Install maintain, chlorinate and repair water mains.
?Maintain wells.
?Locate and mark buried distribution water lines and valves.
?Maintain records on valves, curb stops, and hydrants.
?Requisition materials and equipment.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES
?Janitorial work, shoveling, plowing and grounds maintenance
?Operate vactor/rodder truck, sludge trucks, and snow plows as required.
CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR
Injury to one’s self or others and in extreme circumstances, loss of life. Financial harm to the
employer could be an additional consequence of error.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma and valid Michigan Driver’s license. Must obtain and maintain a Class A
CDL with tanker endorsement within 6 months of date of hire.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Working knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plants and distribution systems, and
ability to use tools and equipment necessary to the operation and maintenance thereof.
SELECTION GUIDELINES
Selection is based on strength of application, formal training, experience and personal interview.
Job related aptitude testing may be incorporated into the selection process.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Vehicles, air tools, tapping machine, compressor, jack hammer, compactor, concrete saw, pipe
saw, grinder, drill, dump truck, plow, sludge truck, vactor/rodder truck, backhoe, front-end
loader, mower, sweeper, fork lift, thawing machine, pumps, hand tools, wrenches, chains, and
detection devices.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather and under various working conditions
and must be able to frequently lift up to 75 lbs and occasionally move up to 100 lbs. This position
requires the ability to walk, talk, crouch, stoop, crawl, see, distinguish colors, hear, handle and
balance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily outdoors where the noise level is frequently loud and there is
frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, confined spaces, fumes,
dust, airborne particles and electrical currents. Work is occasionally performed indoors.
