The Ontonagon County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified applicants
for a full-time Corrections Officer position.
General Summary: Under the general supervision of the Jail Administrator assigned to the Jail facility. Performs various functions that ensure the secure operation of the Jail Facilities, as well as maintaining a safe environment for all incarcerated individuals.
Consideration will be given to applicants who possess an interest in becoming a Road Deputy.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS (as published under the authority of P.A. 125 of 2003):
Age and Citizenship: Must be at least 18 years of age and a United States Citizen.
Education: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Driver’s License: The applicant must possess a valid operator's license.
Drug Testing: Applicants will be screened for the use of illegal controlled substances. This testing will be completed after the conditional offer of employment.
Good Moral Character: Possess a good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation covering school and employment records, personal traits and integrity. Consideration will be given to all criminal and civil law violations as indicating lack of good character.
Experience: Preferred coursework in criminal justice or psychology.
Other Requirements:
- Within one year of employment, the applicant must successfully pass a certified Michigan Corrections Officer Academy.
- Must complete an annual 20 hours of in-service training to maintain State of Michigan Corrections Officer certification.
The Sheriff's Office is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Shift work schedules include nights, weekends, holidays and unanticipated overtime.
Schedule: The Sheriff’s Office operates on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule consisting of both day shift and night shift.
Salary and Benefits: Starting wage for this position is $20.26/hr with a 3-year step increase and MERS retirement package and Health Insurance through BC/BS.
