
Position Summary
Under the supervision of a shift Sergeant and the Police Chief, the Police Officer enforces laws and ordinances to protect lives and property, promote public safety, and build positive community relationships. Assignments may include Community Policing, Investigations, or Road Patrol. Work follows standard police practices and departmental regulations.
Essential Duties
The following represent core responsibilities of the Police Officer role. Additional duties may be assigned as needed:
- Law Enforcement & Public Safety: Enforce local/state laws, prevent criminal activity, respond to emergencies, investigate complaints, and ensure public order.
- Patrol Duties: Patrol streets, buildings, and facilities via vehicle, foot, bicycle, or motorcycle. Issue tickets, serve warrants, and apprehend suspects.
- Crime Investigation: Collect evidence, interview victims/witnesses, conduct surveillance, and oversee crime scenes. Prepare reports and assist with prosecutions.
- Community Engagement: Work with residents, businesses, schools, and groups on crime prevention and safety initiatives. Serve as a School Resource Officer or community specialist.
- Emergency Response: Administer first aid, handle medical emergencies, respond to accidents, fires, domestic disputes, and other incidents.
- Special Assignments: Train colleagues as a Field Training Officer or in specialized skills (e.g., firearms, gang awareness). Assist with grant writing.
- Court Support: Attend court, testify in cases, and provide evidence as required.
- Physical Preparedness: Perform physically demanding tasks, including pursuit, rescue, and operating emergency equipment.
Qualifications
To perform this job effectively, candidates must meet the following:
- U.S. citizenship and attainment of the age of majority.
- Minimum educational attainment of:
- Bachelor’s degree in any field, or
- Associate’s degree in criminal justice with 2 years of law enforcement experience, or
- 60 credits in a related field with 2 years of law enforcement experience.
- Certification (or eligibility) by Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Compliance with Public Act 78, 1935, and its amendments.
- Physical and psychological fitness for police duties.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, community policing, and legal procedures.
- Proficiency in operating police vehicles, equipment, firearms, and computers.
- Effective communication, documentation, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to remain calm and exercise good judgment under stress.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays.
