Summary This position performs trail maintenance repairs, and construction of park trails. The incumbent works primarily on front country trails throughout the park. This position may assist journeyman level tradesmen to complete park projects. Oversees the construction, improvements and day-to-day maintenance of the lakeshore's trail system consisting of 80 miles of hiking and 22 miles of ski trail, walkways, boardwalk, puncheon, turnpike, footbridges and associated inventory and structures. Responsibilities Perform all aspects of trail work, including resurfacing, maintenance, repair and construction of a variety of walls, trail bridges, abutments, causeways and other structures. Removal of hazard trees using specialized equipment. Rigging tasks in construction projects, using cables, ropes, slings, and chains, to include using heavy equipment to remove large rocks etc. Maintain and build back country pit toilets. Work on associated trail-side structures and facilities. Work with small engine maintenance and repair. Dirt and sand removal using a variety of mechanized medium and heavy equipment. Actively participates in the Park Safety Program and the Back Country Program Meetings, to include holding daily meetings, safety walk-arounds and the instruction and use of personal protective equipment to be worn at all times. Area Information Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500) and Grand Marais. The duty station for these positions are at Munising and Grand Marais. Government housing may be available for rent. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Grand Marais has a population of less than 500 people and shopping is limited. K-12 schools are available in Grand Marais. Basic shopping and medical facilities for those at Grand Marais are available 60 miles away in Munising. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by sub-zero temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 140 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing.
