Job Summary:
The City of Bay City is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Firefighter/Engineer. This role performs fire suppression, emergency medical services, and rescue operations under the direction of a Battalion Chief. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus, participating in emergency rescue activities, and ensuring the safety and protection of life and property in our community.
Illustrative Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to fire situations: control hose lines, operate nozzles, erect ladders, and utilize various firefighting tools.
- Drive fire apparatus to incidents and operate pumps, aerial ladders, and auxiliary equipment.
- Conduct interior searches, rescue, suppression activities, salvage, and overhaul operations.
- Provide emergency medical care and perform rescues, including vehicle extrications and industrial entrapments.
- Inspect, clean, and maintain firefighting apparatus, equipment, stations, and grounds.
- Write detailed fire and EMS reports and operate related computer software systems.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Firefighter I & II Certification
- High School Diploma
- State of Michigan EMT License
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License
- Operational Level Hazmat Certification
- CPR/AED Certification
- Successful completion of CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) or OPAT (Oakland Physical Agility Test)
- Knowledge of local geography and principal city locations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing
- Ability to work collaboratively within the department's three divisions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Equivalent combinations of education, certifications, and experience at the discretion of the Public Safety Director.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
- Exposure to outdoor environments, extreme temperatures, hazardous substances, and loud noise.
- Manual labor involving walking, climbing, kneeling, and lifting 50-150 lbs. frequently.
- Requires wearing protective gear and working extended hours, including weekends.
