Position Summary:
The Department of Mathematics at Central Michigan University invites applications for a fixed-term faculty appointment in mathematics education effective January 2025. Full-time fixed-term faculty are generally expected to teach four courses per semester. Courses may be face-to-face or online and at the undergraduate or graduate level.
The Department of Mathematics has an immediate need in its Educator Preparation Program courses, including courses for PK and elementary education (focusing on the teaching and learning of counting, whole number representations, and whole number operations; negative numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and proportional reasoning; patterns, shapes, measurement, and data, all with high-leverage teaching practices) as well as secondary education courses such as probability and statistics explored through a problem-based and technology-enhanced approach connecting secondary mathematics curricula with undergraduate mathematics and pedagogical content. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach mathematics courses such as College Algebra.
This is an initial one-semester appointment; however, reappointment is expected, subject to favorable evaluation and annual enrollment projections.
Required Qualifications:
• Master’s in mathematics with additional coursework in education or curriculum and instruction; OR Master’s in education, curriculum and instruction (or similar program), with at least 18 credits of graduate level mathematics.
• Eligibility for membership in CMU’s Education Preparation Program, which requires experience in, as well as continuing scholarship and service related to PK-12 education, ideally with a focus on mathematics education.
• Specialized knowledge of current research in mathematics education, in addition to the potential to instruct teacher candidates in a variety of pedagogical methods courses.
• Ability to demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
