GENERAL PURPOSE
Provide labor support to the City of Escanaba Public Works function.

Supervised by department Foremen, Public Works Director, Assistant Director, and
operators as directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following are examples of the duties required for this position. The following does
not include all duties which an employee may be expected to perform.
• Collecting refuse and recyclables. Plowing and removing snow from streets, parking lots, and bike paths.
• Performing tree and ground maintenance, including planting, mowing, landscaping, trimming, leaf and debris removal, watering, fertilizing, digging, snow shoveling.
• Painting, cleaning, and maintaining City properties.
• Performing manual labor for City construction projects.
• Completing other assigned projects.
• Pre-and-post trip walk arounds on all equipment: Grease, fuel, and clean equipment (wash weekly and/or as needed). Ensure vehicles are equipped with correct equipment pertaining to the vehicle.
• Building maintenance includes day-to-day tasks: cleaning, vacuuming, sweeping,
emptying trash, washing windows, and restocking items throughout the building.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Provide labor support to other City departments as directed.
CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR
Injury to self or others, damage to City property or personal property, adverse impact on
departmental expenses.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma, equipment/tool experience, and a valid Michigan
driver’s license. A Class B CDL is preferred. If the employee does not have a Class B
CDL, the City will pay for training after a successful six-month evaluation, with a
reimbursement agreement if the employee leaves early. A CDL must be obtained within
one year of hire and maintained thereafter; failure to do so will result in termination.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; familiarity with
Escanaba’s geography; strong mechanical aptitude. Ability to take initiative to carry out
assignments without direct supervision.
SELECTION GUIDELINES
Selection and hiring are based on strength of education, experience, oral interview, and
aptitude testing. A pre-employment physical and background check are required.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Pickup truck, dump truck, garbage truck, sweeper, water truck, salter, brush chipper,
shovel, snow blower, chain saw, hand mower, tractor mounted power mower, air
compressor, forklift, concrete forms, drill, and various hand tools. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and
the ability to adjust focus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach, talk, hear, smell, climb,
balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, sit, use hands to finger, handle and feel. Must be
able to lift or move up to 75 lbs. and occasionally lift and move up to 100 lbs. The
employee is seldom required to taste or smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions. Some indoor work is
required. The noise level varies from moderate to loud. The employee must frequently
work near moving mechanical parts and near fumes or airborne particles. Use of a
respirator and/or hearing protection is sometimes required.
