Public Health Nutritionist/Breastfeeding Coordinator IBCLC

• $49,117 - $55,252/ Year

Duties:

• Plans, develops, and implements nutritional education and care plans for program participants in conjunction with the Women, Infants and Children's (WIC) program and general health education programs.
• Works with high-risk clients to develop individualized feeding plans and documents encounters and breastfeeding education in MI-WIC.
• Acts on referrals from WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding situations beyond their scope of practice.
• Provides counseling to high-risk mothers and infants and develops strategies to assist them in initiating and maintaining breastfeeding.
• Acts as a liaison with medical providers to approve requests for specialized infant nutritional needs.
• Serves as an advisor on nutrition to special health projects such as Family Planning and Maternal and Child Health Programs.
• Provides consultation and in-service training on nutrition to departmental employees and employees of related health organizations.
• Assists with the establishment of goals, objectives, protocols, and policies for the breastfeeding and peer counselling programs.
• Participates in the recruitment, hiring, training, and mentorship of new peer counselors in alignment with program policy and standards.
• Monitors the breastfeeding program; collects data and metrics as well as spot checks.
• Provides lactation mentoring and training to WIC staff and Peer Counselors.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Registered Nurse or its equivalent in terms of education and training and a minimum of one year of experience in breastfeeding program management, promotion, and counseling.
• Must be an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), or obtain IBCLC Certification within one year of hire. 

Special Requirements:

• Must complete Loving Support training and attend WIC Breastfeeding Basics 2-day training within first year of hire.
• Will be required to attend the annual WIC conference, bimonthly Breastfeeding Coalition meetings and other breastfeeding related conferences and trainings as appropriate.
• IBCLC must have designated hours, separate from other clinic duties to provide services. Will be expected to contact clients within 24 business hours of the assessed need for clinical lactation service, with a visual assessment by the IBCLC within 48 business hours.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle throughout the course of employment.
• In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Enthusiasm for promoting and supporting breastfeeding, with a commitment to staying up to date with breastfeeding best practices, journal articles, and educational materials.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles of human nutrition and the dietary control of diseases.
• Capable of applying education and public information techniques to plan, organize, and develop a public nutrition consultation and education program.
• Able to maintain strict client confidentiality.
• Able to work with community organizations in the development of nutrition programs.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact with diverse populations.
