General Purpose of Job:
The key responsibilities for the Unit Secretary will include answering the phones, keeping track of patient ED charts, patient status, discharged patient orders, operating the page system, performing administrative support functions, ED patient charts, patient status (arrivals and discharges), data entry of patient orders, and proficient use of Exit Writer program.
Essential Duties:

- Responsible for greeting patients, families and internal/external customers in an appropriate and professional manner.
- Is able to meet written department customer service standards
- Answer and handles all incoming calls promptly and politely. Refers calls to appropriate providers of care when required, and takes complete messages for providers that do not need to be accessed immediately. Empowered to be a problem-solver in assisting callers (e.g. transferring misrouted calls to the appropriate extensions).
- Upon request of RN or Physicians, places pages and routes callbacks.
- Keeps track of charts, maintains an update awareness of the ED environment (updates the boards, knows who is currently on shift [physicians, RNs, LPNs, ED Techs]).
- Keeps track of ED patient’s status and communicates the ED location of the patient to the appropriate internal/external clients.
- Coordinates the discharge of patients by assuring the patient’s discharge instructions are complete and accurate, and alerts the nurse if needed that the discharge is ready.
- Anticipates the needs of the nursing staff and functions as an integrated member of the team in helping to strip linens, clean stretchers, and make the beds.
- Maintains the 24 hour census log for the Emergency Department.
- Understands STEMI and STROKE alerts as well as the required documentation.
- Upon Request of the RN or Physician, calls to dispatch ambulances, critical care ground transport teams or helicopters.
- Performs daily tasks and reports as required.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
Demonstrated typing speed of 40 wpm. Demonstrate computer skills including word processing and data entry. Excellent verbal and communication skills required |
