General Purpose of Job:
To provide a safe, secure and orderly environment so that quality, compassionate, accessible healthcare services can be provided without undue fear for personal safety and the safety of property.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for, and provide assistance to, Caregivers, patients, physicians, volunteers and guests of the Sparrow Health System.
- Greet patients, visitors, and caregivers while patrolling Sparrow facilities. Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's ICARE values.
- Respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve, in accordance with HIPPA.
- Maintain safe handling of dangerous weapons/ items. Appropriately Render firearms safe and secure.
- Provide Visitors with information and direct them appropriately to departments, rooms and functions within the Sparrow Health System. Initiate problem solving when information is lacking (i.e. no doctors name, no paperwork, wrong building, wrong hospital.)
- Recognize potential violent/disruptive behavior and assist with the intervention.
- Learn various Security technologies and software applications (CCTV, Access Control Systems, ID Badging, , Intercom Systems, Radios and Paging Systems).
- Maintain current knowledge of Sparrow properties and related security technologies to ensure proper response to calls for service.
- Assist with hazards (fire, water, chemical etc.) contain or call for assistance. Assist with housekeeping duties. Coordinate, direct and ensure an efficient Caregiver response to fire alarms and chemical spills/leaks.
- Respond to alarms, code pages and calls for assistance.
- Assists with setting up Incident Command Center, implementing appropriate facility lockdown and access control procedures. Manages pedestrian/ vehicular traffic and, as necessary, assists with decontamination procedures (staging and property collection).
- Monitor and control access to Sparrow properties/units in accordance with current policies and procedures. Including locking and unlocking buildings/offices and screening of visitors after hours.
- Assist Caregivers with disorderly and/or combative individuals.
- Monitor vehicle traffic, parking facilities and assist motorists as necessary. Conduct investigations associated with automobile accidents, theft, damage or malicious destruction.
- Provide safe transport and safekeeping for various hospital monies and patient valuables.
- Conduct investigations and submit reports for administrative review, such as reports of Investigation.
- Perform other duties, as directed, associated with stat materials, medical records acquisition, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology deliveries, etc.
- Identify the need for and utilize resources that serve those with language, visual or hearing challenges.

Work Experience |
• Minimum of one-year previous security experience or 2 years of experience in a related field (customer service, security, or occupation in the criminal justice field). • Healthcare security experience. Preferred. |
Education |
• High school diploma or GED equivalent. • Unrestricted drivers' license and no excessive traffic violations. • Associate degree (core classes in Security/Safety Administration, Criminal Justice Law, English, or Social Sciences). Preferred. |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
• Able to certify in unarmed self-defense and control techniques, as well as crisis prevention and intervention techniques during the probation period. • Able to show competency and/or ability to learn various computerized security technology and software programs during the probationary period. • Knowledge of good body mechanics and in good physical condition. • Able to demonstrate ability to work well under pressure. • Excellent communication and public relations skills (written and oral). • Basic knowledge of civil and criminal law. • Basic firearm safety and familiarization of firearms. • De-escalation Training. Preferred. |
