Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group. The electrified propulsion engineering and design (ePED) team is one of the groups in the electrified propulsion development division of HATCI responsible for providing quality, testing, validation, technical support, and component design for all types of vehicle propulsion systems.
The Position
We are looking for a talented, passionate and motivated propulsion system technician in the propulsion management and design (PMD) team at our Superior Township, MI facility. This position will support HATCI's propulsion development activities for vehicle energy efficiency, emissions, fleet durability, prototype/pilot state vehicle instrumentation for feature calibration and benchmarking.
Core Responsibilities:
Responsible for supporting prototype vehicle builds, instrumentation and testing
Installation of external measurement devices; thermocouples, oxygen sensors, transducers and flow sensors
Installation and setup of ETAS data acquisition hardware
Replace parts on evaluation and development vehicles as needed: may include exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, etc. and other mechanical work.
Support project and team success through coordination and tracking of test equipment, installation, debugging and leading the execution of project activities through completion
Manage consumable inventory and order parts as required to support prototype builds
Support Propulsion System calibration team in basic data collection
Perform general housekeeping to maintain an organized and safe work environment
Perform administrative tasks such as timecard, vacation requests, travel request, etc.
Update and track work requests and documentation using MS SharePoint task system
Support Propulsion System Test Trips as needed in hot and cold environments
Develop and suggest improvement to the current processes and procedures
Support OBD fleet vehicle general maintenance; oil change, tire rotation/replacement, fluid replacement, spark plugs, fuel injectors, air filters etc.
Prepare vehicles for emission testing prior to vehicle going into vehicle emissions laboratory
Conduct development vehicle check-in process
Support competitor ICE/hybrid vehicle benchmarking instrumentation
Collaborate with global teams in the US and South Korea, with occasional domestic and international travel (up to 10%).
Core Capabilities:
Detailed understanding of vehicle propulsion systems, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, and BEVs.
Knowledge of basic vehicle instrumentation equipment and techniques
Basic fabrication skills including the ability to weld
High mechanical aptitude with the ability to replace powertrain systems, engine, transmission etc.
Experience in debugging and resolving hardware issues
Working knowledge of vehicle communication network systems (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.)
Ability to instrument a vehicle and setup data acquisition systems
Knowledge of the fundaments of the internal combustion engines and hybrid electric vehicles
Knowledge of OBD Regulations and OBD Monitor Systems
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
Demonstrated integrity and ethical behavior
Effective communication skills for technical discussions with various stakeholders.
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
Basic Qualifications:
High school diploma, GED or vocational certificate from accredited technical school
2+ years of experience in prototype vehicle builds
2+ years of experience in automotive mechanics
Strong knowledge in propulsion system principles and operation
Working knowledge of instrumentation/operation of data acquisition systems such as ETAS
Strong interpersonal and technical problem solving skills
Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
Basic Microsoft Windows computer skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's in Automotive Technology or relevant trade school
ASE Certification
State of Michigan Mechanic Certifications
2+ years of total automotive industry experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) instrumentation and testing of vehicle propulsion and related systems, (2) instrumentation for evaluating mHEV, FHEV, PHEV, and BEV performance, emissions, and fuel economy/efficiency
Working level knowledge of vehicle testing tools such as ETAS INCA or CAN bus monitoring applications such as Vector CANalyzer or similar
