Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan - Occasional Travel Required to Lansing, MI or Detroit, MI Office
Purpose: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Bureau of HIV and STI Programs (BHSP) conducts routine HIV and STI surveillance within the state of Michigan. MDHHS staff will work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement the STI Surveillance Network project (SSuN). The SSuN Data Collector will work alongside the SSuN Data Coordinator/Collector to conduct enhanced investigations on a random sample of individuals diagnosed with gonorrhea and adult early syphilis via electronic medical record review, telephone and fax follow up. They will also conduct patient interviews to seek additional behavioral, demographic and health care information. Attempts to conduct patient interviews may occur during non-traditional work hours. The patient sample is matched to the HIV registry for additional case investigation and feedback to partner services staff in MDHHS. Data collectors are required to enter data and maintain record of all attempts and/or contacts with participants using a comprehensive database. This position is supported by a federal grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is renewed yearly as funds are available and projects are continued.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Follow the established protocols for contacting and recruiting potential interviewees.
Conduct investigative searches to obtain pertinent contact information for sampled individuals.
Use all methods approved by the CDC to contact individuals throughout the recruitment process.
Maintain the confidentiality of all individuals and protect all data collected as described in the confidentiality policy of the department.
Recruit interviewees for participation in the SSuN.
Conduct patient interviews on a random sample of gonorrhea and syphilis cases (behavioral, demographic, health care seeking, HIV/STI risks and testing history, HIV prevention - PEP/PrEP)
Work with staff members care facilities for recruitment of interviewees or obtaining medical records. This will require flexibility in adapting to diverse clinicalenvironments as well as flexibility in work hours and schedule.
Conduct provider investigations (complete treatment details, partner services data, provider information, signs and symptoms, STI screening info, treatment details, etc. )
Matched sampled patients to HIV case registry
Provide information on matched patients to HIV surveillance partners
Keep records of all activities related to each individual, such as dates of contact attempts via US mail, email, phone, text, and home visits, care status, interview and medical record review status throughout data collection.
Represents the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI at all times.

Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Nursing, Social Work, Nursing, or health and human service-related field required.
Experience: Experience working with highly sensitive public health data; Minimum two years' experience transcribing physician orders, medical billing, or reviewing/abstracting medical records; Proficient with MS Office including Excel.
Preferred Experience: Experience survey recruitment; Experience in HIV/STI related position or working with high-risk populations.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: This position will work remotely, subject to change at leadership discretion. Occasional travel to BSHP offices located at Cadillac Place in Detroit or Edgewood in Lansing may be required. Selected candidates who have beenapproved to work remotely or work hybrid must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.
