Summary
The EHS Support Specialist works with the Environmental Health and Safety Department to provide support functions in the department's planning, directing, and implementation of environmental health and safety programs and to promote a positive, safe, and healthy campus environment.
Direct responsibility for daily maintenance of EHS software platforms, social media communications, including the departmental website, and managing various EHS communication streams is an integral part of this position's duties.
With a working fundamental knowledge of university safety programs and governmental safety standards, this position will support and foster the growth of campus safety culture and governmental compliance requirements.
This position responds to emergency situations if required and will provide support to EHS and emergency operations staff during emergent events.
Responsibilities
Managing the EHS office.
Provides EHS financial and procurement support.
Assists in developing and tracking departmental budgets.
Scheduling, maintaining, and documenting all regulatory compliance, regulatory deadlines, training requests, and EHS activities for EHS staff through the EHS Master Calendar.
Assisting in the completion, documentation, and submission of required EHS reports and recordkeeping information for both internal and external stakeholders.
Conducting EHS support training as needed, including safety learning management system administer training and additional EHS software support training.
Responding to incident communication(s) including injuries and near-miss events when senior personnel are not available.
Assist in driving closure of effective corrective / preventive actions of incident investigations, audits, and inspections.
Responsible for daily maintenance of EHS software platforms.
Assist in providing managers/supervisors with university policy /regulatory information.
Training and assisting others (managers, employees, etc.) to complete their safety and compliance responsibilities (audits, follow safety rules, etc.).
Developing and maintaining EHS metrics to meet the statistical needs of campus administration/academic teams and governmental regulatory compliance reports.
Coach management and employees at all levels to advance compliance with all EHS program expectations and applicable federal & state laws
Respond to emergency situations when they arise.
Handling employee complaints and grievances as they relate to EHS.
Perform other duties, as assigned, in support of the EHS Strategic Plan.
Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures
? Associate's degree in sciences or engineering, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
? Possesses or has the ability to complete an Authorized General Industry OSHA 30 course.
? Valid Driver's License with no more than a total combination of five (5) current points in the Michigan (or any other) point system, with no single infraction totaling more than three (3) points.

? Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and customer service with the ability to effectively communicate with and work well with a wide variety of clientele.
? Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence people and drive change in the safety culture.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
2+ years office management and EHS Experience preferred.

? Familiar with various office equipment, computers and various programs including Microsoft and Google Suite software, networking, and e-mail programs.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands
? Most work is performed in an office environment.
? Travel for this position may be required.
? While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk 10% of the time, stand 10% of the time and sit 80% of the time.
? Position may require travel between Michigan Tech and other locations.
? In the course of university functions, employees may be required to drive passenger and 15 passenger vans.
? The employee will occasionally lift and or carry up to 25 lbs.
? Employee may use computers, phones, copiers and other office equipment in the course of daily duties.
? While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to use hand and fingers, handle or feel objects, touch and use tools, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, twist, lift, reach, push, pull, grasp, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, grasp, talk, hear, and walk during the course of employment.

Required Departmental Training:
? Employee will be required to work a minimum of forty (40) hours per week.
? Schedule may vary based on EHS demands and may occasionally require a combination of office hours as well as work performed after hours and/or weekends.
