The Service Coordinator (SC) provides an array of self-sufficiency supportive services to Detroit Housing Commission (DHC) residents and their families. They may provide informal counseling; information and referral; plan educational programs; coordinate volunteer opportunities; linkage to community service agencies and negotiate affordable services as needed. The SC also educates residents on available services, develops contacts with service providers and agencies for resident referrals and monitors provision and quality services. The service coordinator works in conjunction with the manager(s) and other management staff of the housing authority to empower residents to become economically independent and self-reliant. Additionally, all other duties as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma/GED obtained. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- 2 years or more experience and knowledge of community services within the region and services that are provided for the population living within the housing communities.
- 2 years or more experience with family and children services, workforce development, disability services, drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues.
- 2 years or more experience with awareness of eligibility and procedures of Federal and State entitlement programs.
- 2 years or more experience with identifying legal liability issues relating to providing service coordination.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must have or be able to acquire a valid state driver’s license.
- Must pass federal, state, and local criminal investigation clearances, and pass a drug screening test administered by the Commission or its designated provider.
- Must be insurable under the agency’s insurance policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

- Establish programs based on the (5) Pillars of Self-Sufficiency including but not limited to Economic Empowerment, Digital Inclusion, Educational Advancement, Health & Wellness and Character & Leadership 50%
- Provides case management (i.e., evaluation of social, psychological, and physical needs and the development of a service plan) for a resident when such service is not being provided by the general service community 25%
- Provide mediation services for resident's disputes, as appropriate, and seek out assistance with existing community resources when needed 5%
- Assists and advocates residents and family members of all services which may be necessary to maintain a self-reliant lifestyle 2%
- Monitors and performs quality supportive services delivery to residents 2%
- Educates residents on service availability, application procedures, residents rights, etc. both individually and as a group 2%
- Reports all suspected abuse situations to the appropriate agency 1%
- Assists resident/family when a higher level of care may be necessary 1%
