Summary:
A Concrete Labor/Finisher Apprentice will work directly with a Van Laan Concrete Construction Foreman, where the individual will gain experience and knowledge in commercial, industrial, institutional, and high-end residential projects.
Responsibilities:
- Accomplishing the required tasks for the individuals approved apprenticeship program.
- Responsible for the quality of the floor and able to manage the finishing process.
- Proficient at finishing on a walk behind trowel, pouring interior and exterior floors, and hand screening and operating a vibra-strike.
- Ability to set and run the laser, the edge, and the walk behind power towel.
- Assist team members by laying out forming materials and setting and putting down forming as directed.
- Prepares work site for concrete pours, using shovels and other hand tools to backfill area with sub-grade materials and to compact and level work area.
- Ability to build forms, pour concrete, and set strings.
- Closely follows directions to operate machinery, hold or supply materials and tools, and load or unload items with machinery.
- Reports on any issues to higher-level employees.
- Responsible for the adherence of self and crew to all OSHA and VLCC Safety regulations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Approved Apprenticeship Program
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to listen, understand, and follow directions.
- Ability to work in a variety of roles.
- Equipment Operator Certified – Trained by VLCC
- Valid driver's license
Educations:
- High School Diploma/equivalent, and successful completion of pre-apprentice concrete course of study
- Job training for this position is provided by VLCC.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises and smells associated with the job site.
- Ability to constantly stand, walk, see, talk, and hear.
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, stop/crouch, kneel, and reach.
- Must be able to carry and/or lift at least 50 pounds.
