FIREFIGHTER STUDENT EMT or FIREFIGHTER STUDENT PARAMEDIC
Pay rate will be increased after academy completion to $43,459.00.
MAXIMUM SALARY UPON COMPLETION OF FOUR (4) YEARS:

Firefighter/EMT: $70,941.00 - Firefighter/Paramedic: $75,033.00
The Detroit Fire Department provides a safe environment for Detroit's citizens and visitors through public education, enforcement of fire codes and deployment of efficient emergency response resources.
The Department has 1,200+ employees assigned to 7 (seven) Divisions (Communications, Community Relations, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Fighting Operations, Fire Marshal, Fire Investigations, and Fire Training). Operating out of 39 facilities throughout the City of Detroit.
SUMMARY
Under immediate supervision, respond to emergency incidents with an assigned Company and extinguish fires or mitigate the incident. Clean and care for apparatus, equipment, and quarters.
Under general supervision and within the scope of practice of an Emergency Medical Technician (Basic), responds to 9-1-1 calls for service to include medical, trauma and other public emergency situations; administers pre-hospital emergency medical care in accordance with approved medical protocols and Department rules and regulations; operates department issued emergency vehicles and provides transportation of the sick and injured to medical care facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may perform other duties as assigned)
Rescue people and salvage property.
Position and climb ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings, or to rescue individuals from burning structures.
Operate a variety of fire department apparatus and vehicles.
Assist with mitigation of chemical hazmat, weapons of mass destruction and Homeland Security events.
Participate in public education programs and community relations activities to educate the public on how to protect life and property.
Use a variety of equipment and special materials to treat injured persons including airway management and ventilation support equipment, defibrillators, extrication equipment, various kinds of splints, special dressings and bandages.
Transport injured persons to appropriate treatment facilities in emergency and non-emergency medical units.
Recognizes the need for transporting unusual cases to particular hospitals where specialized treatment is available; continues patient care while in transit.
Attend in-service and other training classes to enhance technical skills.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D. (General Educational Development) equivalent.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements
Candidates must provide proof of a valid Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) at the time of interview and hire.
Employees in this class will be required to operate a motor vehicle. Valid State of Michigan Operator License required.
Employees in this class will be required to successfully pass and maintain a State of Michigan EMT license, at a minimum, and all required training to maintain.
Employees in this class will be required to successfully pass and maintain the State of Michigan Firefighters Training Council eligibility standards.
A valid State of Michigan EMT or Paramedic License is preferred.
Equivalency
Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
CANDIDATE PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST (CPAT) REQUIREMENT
The City of Detroit accepts Schoolcraft College Firefighter CPAT or from any other location.

CPAT is "REQUIRED" in order to be scheduled for an oral interview.

PRIOR TO INTERVIEW
A passing score on the Computerized Based Test (CBT) is required in order to be interviewed.
If you are successful in the testing round, you will be invited to an oral interview with a two (2) member panel comprised of operational and support staff from the City of Detroit.

COMPUTERIZED BASED TEST QUESTIONS
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the Computerized Based Test.
The City of Detroit - Recruitment & Selection Division will facilitate scheduling of the Computerized Based Test.
The Computerized Based Test is made up of Reading Comprehension, Sentence Clarity, Basic Mathematics, Map Reading and Spelling.

Copy of Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT)
Copy of High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Copy of Valid State of MI Operator License
Copies of Proof of Work History ("IF APPLICABLE") - A letter of reference on company letterhead stating your job title(s), duties, length of employment and work history OR If employers are unwilling to provide such letters, you may submit copies of paycheck stubs or W-2 Forms for employment periods claimed or official performance evaluations.
Copy of Proof of Military Service ("IF APPLICABLE") - Military Discharge papers / DD 214 (Member 4 long-form copy), including the Character of Discharge for each term of enlistment, NGB 22 or USDVA signed verification of service letter.
Copies of Proof of Domicile Credit ("IF APPLICABLE") - "Any individual whose domicile is in the City of Detroit twelve (12) months preceding the date of filing his or her application for employment and receives a passing score on the initial computerized based test for entry into classified service shall have fifteen (15) points added to his or her final score in determining his or her eligibility for the position(s) sought".
Proof of Domicile - to prove Domicile in the City of Detroit, an applicant must present proper identification in the form of a valid State of MI Operator License, or State of MI Identification Card, or a valid passport AND submit at least one of the following forms of documentation:
Copies of the front and signature pages of federal income tax return forms and/or W2 forms for the two (2) years immediately preceding the date of application, or
Copies of City of Detroit property bills for the two (2) years immediately preceding the date of application, or
Copies of utility bills/statements addressed to the applicant that reflects billing/assessment dates twelve (12) months preceding the date of application, or any other official docu
