GENERAL SUMMARY:
Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development seeks to hire a part-time, temporary Parks & Natural Resources Intern to work closely with our team to support a wide range of initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of our parks and natural areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducting tree inventories in smaller communities such as Utica, Romeo, Mount Clemens, and New Baltimore, as well as at past planting sites. This involves collecting data on tree species, size, health, and location to inform future management decisions.
Assisting in editing and updating the Tour Lake St. Clair website to provide visitors with accurate and engaging information about our parks, trails, and natural attractions.
Collaborating with public works departments, conservation organizations like the Clinton River Watershed Council (CRWC), or Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas (CISMA) to support their initiatives related to park maintenance, invasive species management, or habitat restoration.
Watering trees as needed to ensure their health and vitality, particularly during dry or hot periods. This may involve using watering equipment and following watering schedules.
Assisting in the development of landscape designs for park improvement projects, including planting plans, hardscape layouts, and erosion control measures.
Providing support in the development and implementation of a sustainability plan or checklist to guide our efforts in reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices in park management.
General design opportunities associated with improving landscapes and assistance with aspects of our master planning and sustainability programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate is a college student or graduate with an educational background in Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Landscape Architecture, or a related field. Strong interest in conservation, environmental stewardship, and outdoor recreation is required.
This is a part-time, temporary position not to exceed 30 hours per week paid at the rate of $14.19 not to exceed 390 hours for the year but may be extended if funding is available. Benefits are not included with compensation. This position has flexible work hours between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm M-F
The selected candidate will be based with the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development located at 1 South Main on the 7th Floor in downtown Mount Clemens.
