About the Unit
6 and 8 Center at Butterworth Hospital are secure units with 20 private beds on each that specialize in Women and Infant Services, specifically postpartum care of Mother Baby couplets, after labor and delivery. The average length of postpartum patient stay here is 2-3 days. The excellent care provided by the 110 members of our Nursing and Support Team within Postpartum, provides team members and patients with memories that last a lifetime. We're here to guide parents through this transitional period, offering assistance, education, and support every step of the way. We even have Lactation Peer Counselors and Consultants available during your inpatient stay and a lactation warmline for continued assistance.

Scope of work
Provides education for expectant parents, lactating women and their families. Acts as a role model and preceptor for employees regarding lactation education and management.
Collaborates with women / families / members of the health care team regarding lactation issues and management of complex breast-feeding situations. Provides follow-up phone consultation with women / families.
Documents educational process/patient information according to divisional / program / regulatory guidelines.
Provides direct patient support for lactating mothers / families. Works with mothers to enhance latch-on skills and to identify breastfeeding issues. Instructs mothers in pumping and storage procedures. Assists with initiating breastfeeding of the premature / ill newborn as is medically appropriate.
This Day shift Lactation Peer Consultant work 8 hour shifts.
Qualifications
Required Associate's Degree and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification; - - OR - - Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan along with IBCLC certification attainment within one year of placement in the role
5 years of relevant experience maternal /child / neonatal intensive care nursing experience and/or lactation education Required
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification - through AHA or ARC, required within 90 days
