The Team
The Black & Veatch Special Projects Corp. has its mission to provide a full range of services to our primary client base - U.S. Government agencies and departments. The Opportunity
As an Electrical Engineer, you will have the opportunity to:
Independently applyadvanced engineering techniques to develop and execute microgrid projects from feasibility analysis through commissioning.
Review and analyze engineering solutions to various power system, microgrid or transmission and distribution engineering issues.
Assigned to projectsfor U.S. Government Agency and Department clients. This role requires US Citizenship and ability to obtain US Security Clearance.
Directly contribute toglobal projects and missions, including Domestic (US based), Pacific and European locations.
With minimal supervision, applyadvanced engineering techniques and analyses for problems and methods for electric transmission and distribution systems, and all supporting infrastructure required to reliably operate and interconnect energy generation systems serving mission critical customers.
Under general direction, develop and applyadvanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems, requiring knowledge and experience in energy and microgrid projects for resiliency, redundancy and reliability.
This is a HYBRID opportunity with expected requirements of three days in office per week. Candidates located near anymay be considered. Preference may be made for candidates located in Arlington, VA; Overland Park, KS (Kansas City); Denver, CO; Raleigh, NC; Orlando, FL.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Production
Evaluate and assess the feasibility of the implementation of large-scale energy project opportunities, provide engineering, and technical analysist for problem definition, requirements development, and implementation of complex systems such as smart grids, microgrids, battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, diesel and natural gas generators, and alternative energy generation systems in the engineering disciplines required to meet technical requirements.
Create concept and detailed power systems designs for complex projects or programs; produces design drawings, specifications, and design analysis documents
Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
Plans and conducts independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Support development and execution of microgrid projects from feasibility analysis through commissioning.
Coordinate with a BIM team for drawing production; redline documents within Bluebeam.
Develop and execute energy and power system modeling to analyze microgrid characteristics in grid-connected and island-mode, inclusive of: (i) power system stability, (ii) reliability, availability, maintainability (RAM) analysis (iii) power flow, and (iv) profiling of energy supply and demand with various microgrid dispatch modes.
Provide key inputs for life-cycle cost analysis: (i) energy production from distributed energy resource (DER) technologies, and (ii) cost, operation and maintenance inputs for major equipment based on input from technology vendor.
Project Coordination
Actively coordinates with all other internal/external multidiscipline team members and on moderately complex projects
Provides support for construction phase services including the response to requests for information (RFIs) and the review of construction submittals against the design specifications and drawings.
May travel to project sites for client interface, design review meetings, and data collection.
Client Focus
Responsible for assisting with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects
Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on less complex projects
May provide support to business development or pursuit activities
Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology
Recognized as a technical specialist by the division having in-depth knowledge of an engineering process and/or of technical aspects of an industry
Designs a complete project of moderately complex scope within an assigned practice area(s)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
Minimum of 5 years related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Assigned to projects for U.S. Government Agency/Department clients. Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.
Technical experience to also include planning, design and construction oversight in several of the following specialties:
Mission critical power and controls
Low and medium voltage power distribution
Substation Design
Microgrids, including primary/backup diesel and natural gas generators, UPS systems, solar photovoltaic (PV), battery energy storage systems (BESS), fuel cells, etc.
Interconnection studies and applications with utility companies
Electrical studies and power system modeling including load flow, short-circuit, protection & coordination, transient stability, harmonics analysis and time domain load flow. Power system modeling experience using ETAP, SKM, PSSE, or PSLF.
Power quality management.?
