Job Summary:
Plans, implements and assesses a program of instruction that adheres to the district’s mission, philosophy and objectives. Flint Community Schools, an urban public school system with campuses throughout the City of Flint, Michigan, has a long and rich tradition of community education. Flint Community Schools provide a range of academic, extended services and extracurricular activities at the elementary and secondary levels to meet the needs of our students and their families.
Essential Functions:
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.
- Develop and effectively implement purposeful and appropriate lesson plans.
- Demonstrate high expectations for student achievement and behavior.
- Present information and direct structural learning experiences so that individual students learn.
- Address the affective needs of students.
- Develop, in accordance with district and building guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate discipline techniques which are consistent with those rules.
- Assess progress of students on an on-going basis.
- Work cooperatively with parents to strengthen the educational program for their children.
- Work cooperatively with the administration to develop and maintain positive public relations within the community.
- Keep current in subject matter knowledge, educational research, learning theory and professional development issues.
- Indicate a willingness to become involved in extra-curricular activities which extend the learning experience of students.
- Maintain a positive attitude and a sense of humor.
- Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.
- Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws.
- Perform those record-keeping duties necessary to maintain the accountability required for the instructional program and as required by the building principal.
- Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials, as requested.
- Work collaboratively for school improvement.
- Attend staff, department, and committee meetings as required.

Qualifications:
Education: Valid Michigan Elementary Teacher Certification. Bachelor’s Degree. Must meet requirements for highly qualified status under NCLB.
Skills:
- Willingness and ability to work cooperatively on a teaching team.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Knowledge and interest in common assessments/teaching methods necessary.
- Computer/Technology knowledge such as Microsoft Office, Internet, E-mail, Creation of web pages, online grading program, etc. required.
Other:
Residence within a 60-mile radius of the borders of the district is required; residence within the City of Flint is preferred. Newly hired employees must satisfactorily pass: 1) physical examination by a medical doctor; 2) police clearance; 3) reference check, including digital fingerprinting; and 4) 5-panel drug test. Must comply with Student Safety Initiative Legislation, as amended.
Salary & Benefits:
Teacher Basic Salary Schedule ($38,000 - $72,788 Based on experience and education) + $3,000 Hiring Bonus (contingent upon grant funding)
Health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance. Employees shall be subject to the co-payment of health care costs equal to the difference between the premium cost and the annual cost limitation imposed on public employers.
Education:
Valid Michigan Teacher Certification with BR, BT, or BX endorsement (6-12) required.
