Position Purpose:
Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Camp Cavell Counselors are responsible for Day Campers and Overnight Campers as scheduled.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their group/cabin, within activities, and throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
- Overnight Camp: Establish with campers cabin jobs, rules, and emergency procedures. Organize and accompany the cabin overnight.
- Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
- Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
- Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
- Plan cabin activities with campers
- Lead and/or assist with the teaching of activities.
- Provide a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
- Assist in program areas such as waterfront, nature, all camp activities, arts and crafts, etc. as needed to contribute to the successful operation of camp
- Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
- Evaluate information on campers assigned to you
- Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
- Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health Care Manager.
- Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with the Camp Health Manager and/or Camp Director when appropriate.
- Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance are adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the Camp Director.
- Be a role model to campers, staff, and volunteers in attitude and behavior.
- Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
- Work with fellow staff in a supportive manner
- Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.
- Provide parents with appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
- Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.
Other Job Duties:
- Provide supervision for campers while campers are transported to and from camp and/or during scheduled field trips off of camp property.
- Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
- Organize one all-camp, program, or special event
- Attend pre-camp and ongoing staff meetings and training
- Assist with tasks as assigned, including assistance within the kitchen as needed, to further the mission of Camp Cavell
- Complete assigned duties as part of the Hospitality and Housekeeping or “H&H” team to help maintain the beauty and cleanliness of the camp
Relationships:
This job requires that you be able to communicate openly and respectfully with parents, co-workers, CITs, campers, volunteers, and all staff in the camp community.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma and 1 year of college or post-high school work experience in a related field
- Current certification or willing to become certified in child and adult First Aid and CPR
- Must submit health history record and examination form before the first day of work

Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to communicate and work with groups participating, at all age and skill levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
- Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, some bending, walking long distances, and ability to lift a minimum of 25+ lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations
