Summary of Position: | The Ferris Library for Information, Technology, & Education (FLITE) at Ferris State University (Big Rapids, Michigan) seeks a collaborative, innovative, creative, flexible, and user-focused Student Engagement Librarian. FLITE Library is a teaching library where many librarians are engaged in library instruction and information literacy to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed for success when using information. This is an exceptional opportunity to work and grow in a dynamic, technology-intensive library serving a diverse student population.
The librarian in this key role works to advance interdisciplinary learning, utilizes digital resources and technologies, and prepares students for life beyond college, including graduate school, careers, and informed citizenship.
The Student Engagement Librarian coordinates an established, successful library activity as part of the University’s first-year experience program in concert with university students, faculty, and staff. In this role, the individual will use evidence-based practices to lead and develop library services that focus on enhancing first- and second year, first generation, and transfer students’ success and retention.
This is a 12-month, tenure-track with Academic Rank, faculty position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Ferris State University offers a competitive benefits package.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: | Evidence of course work or experience in reference and information literacy. Experience or demonstrated aptitude for teaching information literacy skills to first year and/or first-generation students. Advanced knowledge of technology, especially as it applies to teaching and learning, including in the online environment. Experience with information literacy and pedagogical theories and best practices in an ever-changing environment. Experience with electronic publishing, open access, and scholarly communications. Experience serving diverse and underrepresented student populations. | |
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: | 1. Coordinates and/or delivers information literacy instruction for first-and second year students including First Year Seminars and beginning writing courses, i.e., English 150, and English 250 as well as provides curriculum-integrated instructional sessions to liaison areas which may include upper-division students. 2. Coordinate, implement and report annual assessment/feedback of the library component of the required first-year seminar for quality improvement. 3. Serve as a liaison and collaborates with an assigned group of university departments/programs to support instruction and curriculum resourcing. 4. Keeps abreast of information literacy and pedagogical theories and best practices, particularly as they relate to first-year, first generation, and transfer students. Shares expertise with colleagues concerning evidence-based and innovative strategies to enhance student success and retention. 5.
