Corewell Health is pleased to announce our 2024 Summer Immersion Program for nursing students looking to enhance their academic knowledge and further develop their clinical skills through a hands-on experience with a nurse preceptor.
The Nurse Extern will be paired up with a Nurse Preceptor for this 10-week program beginning May 13, 2024, working (3) 12-hour shifts per week. Working hours are generally 7a.m.-7:30p.m. or 7p.m. to 7:30a.m. We will offer placements in a variety of clinical specialties at each of our 8 hospital campuses which may include Med/Surg, Progressive Care, Critical Care, and Emergency.
Orientation begins on May 13, 2024
To be considered for this program you must be currently enrolled and attending a BSN or ADN registered nursing program, nationally accredited through either CCNE or ACEN. In addition, you must be graduating Fall/Winter 2024 or Spring 2025.
This full time 10-week immersion program requires a mandatory full-time attendance commitment including any enrichment sessions.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under supervision of a Registered Nurse and following hospital policies and procedures, performs various nursing care tasks and treatments on assigned patients.
Performs routine bedside nursing activities including: bathing and personal grooming of patients; ambulating, moving and turning patients; assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices; making patient beds and caring for personal property.
Assists in performing additional nursing procedures such as catheterizations, suctioning, irrigating colostomies, applying restraints, giving enemas, douches and sitz baths or pericare.
Takes vital signs and records intake and output.
Applies and changes sterile and non-sterile dressing using appropriate technique.
Performs more complex nursing procedures and treatments after theoretical preparation and supervised clinical experience.
Keeps professional nursing staff advised of current patient status as well as changes in patient condition as they occur.
Performs assessments and documents accurate, complete and concise patient information on appropriate forms, including flow sheets, activity records, etc.
Participates in nursing staff conferences, in-services and educational opportunities.
Ensures the optimum utilization of personnel, supplies and equipment.
Provides copy of current school transcript to supervisor at the end of each marking period to confirm continued eligibility.
Assists in admitting, transferring and discharging patients.
Assists in pre-operative and post-operative care.
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:
Education / Training:
Currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of registered nursing. May be enrolled in an (accredited) Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) or Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Program.
Requires evidence of successful completion of adult medical-surgical rotations - theory and clinical, required (transcripts must be provided at the time of hire)
American Heart Association (AHA) BLS OR American Red Cross (ARC) BLS, required and must be valid through July 2024

Qualifications
Required Bachelor's Degree Currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of registered nursing. May be enrolled in an (accredited) Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) or Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Program.
Note: ADN graduates will be required to sign a BSN completion agreement upon hire/placement in a graduate nurse position.
Required RN from another state awaiting Michigan Licensure (or) Graduate Nurse from accredited school of nursing awaiting retake of NCLEX or awaiting results of the last exam.
Required Transcripts must be provided at the time of hire and may be requested for review periodically.
