Department of Internal Medicine Gastroenterology at University of Michigan is looking for a highly-motivated Research Laboratory Manager. Our team studies the mechanisms that lead to obesity, liver disease, and cardiometabolic diseases using human genetics, cell and animal models, and human interventional studies. We are seeking an experienced Research Laboratory Manager with experience managing and helping with both computational as well as wet lab and clinical translational projects. The manager must be able to work collaboratively with a broad range of individuals, work independently problem solving and collaboratively. They will use their scientific skills, biological knowledge and creativity to develop and apply cutting edge techniques to research complexities. The candidate will also use skills and experience in laboratory management to run day-to-day operations of the laboratory, interface with research investigators for project development, provide mentoring to research lab staff to ensure successful laboratory operations.
- Troubleshoot and supervise computational, cell line, mouse and human experiments.
- Day-to-day interact with lab members and collaborators, managing timelines and expectations of research projects/operations. Supervisor of 3 or more full-time equivalent employees every week.
- Establishes goals, schedules and coordinates laboratory administration, including budgeting, planning, and purchasing/maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Manage lab presentation schedules.
- Manage recruiting process for lab personnel to hire, fire, and promote assigned employees, make recommendation on lab employees, and training/mentoring lab members.
- Manage staff salaries, hours of work. planning and directing their work. Handle complaints/grievances and discipling when necessary.
- Monitoring lab protocols and Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) inspections.
- Organize, write, and submit papers and grants including helping with collecting data, making tables, writing up sections, making figures, creating budgets, obtaining IRB paperwork, and writing letters.
- Masters degree
- 1-3 years of experience in bioinformatic analysis, computer programming, wet lab, and experience in a laboratory management position.
- Experience interfacing with administrative and human resource teams for hiring, personnel management and budget management.
- Programming in R and/or python is a must. Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF?s and e-mail is required.
- Candidate must have exceptionally strong organizational skills, attention to detail, people management skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a diverse research team, a proven track record of contributing to research papers and grants, and the ability to communicate clearly with team members and the PI.
- Professional management training desirable.
